Abstract: A high-strength parallel yarn rope comprises a series of multifilament rope yarns which are bounded together in parallel relation along their lengths by a binder distributed only on the surfaces of the yarns to form a flexible rope core. The core is surrounded by a braided jacket, and a flexible layer of waterimpervious material adhesively and mechanically bonds the core to the jacket. A method is also disclosed for manufacturing the rope.

Abstract: A load-bearing elevator suspension member includes a plurality of tension members and a compressible jacket at least partially encasing the plurality of tension members. The jacket includes a jacket base material mixed with a corrosion inhibitor that establishes a corrosion-inhibiting coating on the tension members. A method of making such a load-bearing elevator suspension member includes mixing the corrosion inhibitor into a thermoplastic jacket material and applying the resulting mixture to bare steel tension members. As the corrosion inhibitor in the mixture contacts the tension members, the corrosion inhibitor establishes a corrosion-inhibiting coating on the tension members.

Abstract: A tension member for a lifting and/or hoisting system includes a core including a plurality of load carrying fibers arranged in a matrix material, and an outer layer secured to the core including a plurality of outer fibers arranged around a perimeter of the core. The outer layer includes one or more outer fibers arranged off-axis relative to the load carrying fibers of the core. A method of forming a tension member for an elevator system includes arranging a plurality of load carrying fibers along a length of the tension member, retaining the plurality of load carrying fibers in a matrix material to define a core, and enclosing the core in an outer layer including a plurality of outer fibers arranged around a perimeter of the core. The outer layer includes one or more outer fibers arranged off-axis relative to the load carrying fibers of the core.

Abstract: An illustrative method of making an elevator load bearing member having at least one elongated tension member at least partially covered by a jacket includes mixing a flame retardant with a polymer material. The flame retardant is selected from a group consisting of (i) a halogen-free melamine based intumescent comprising melamine cyanurate, melamine-phosphate, melamine pyrophosphate or melamine polyphosphate in an amount up to about 20% by weight of the thermoplastic polymer or (ii) a filled polymer having a nanoscale filler chemically bonded to a matrix phase. Applying the mixed flame retardant and polymer material to the tension member forms a jacket of a desired shape.

Abstract: A hoisting device rope has a width larger than a thickness thereof in a transverse direction of the rope. The rope includes a load-bearing part made of a composite material, said composite material comprising non-metallic reinforcing fibers, which include carbon fiber or glass fiber, in a polymer matrix. An elevator includes a drive sheave, an elevator car and a rope system for moving the elevator car by means of the drive sheave. The rope system includes at least one rope that has a width that is larger than a thickness thereof in a transverse direction of the rope. The rope includes a load-bearing part made of a composite material. The composite material includes reinforcing fibers in a polymer matrix.
