Abstract: Embodiments include systems and methods for scaling power level of an upstream signal by a device processor of a head-end device in a communication network. In embodiments, the device processor may determine a power level of the signal received at the head-end device from a client device. The device processor may determine a difference between the power level of the received signal and a target power level of an analog-to-digital converter of the head-end device, and may adjust the power level of the received signal at the head-end device based on the determined difference. In embodiments, the device processor may determine a power level of an upstream signal to be received by the head-end device, may determine a difference between the power level of the received signal and the target power level, and may adjust the power level of a received signal at the head-end device based on the determined difference.

Abstract: A method for estimating characteristics of an optical receiver includes: a generating process, a monitoring process, a suppressing process, a guiding process and an estimating process. The generating process generates a modulated optical signal based on an oscillation signal. The monitoring process monitors an optical spectrum of the modulated optical signal or a spectrum of an electric signal obtained by performing optical-to-electrical conversion on the modulated optical signal. The suppressing process suppresses a modulation component of an upper sideband or a lower sideband of the modulated optical signal based on the optical spectrum of the modulated optical signal or the spectrum of the electric signal. The guiding process guides the modulated optical signal in which the modulation component is suppressed to the optical receiver. The estimating process estimates the characteristics of the optical receiver based on an output signal of the optical receiver.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for characterizing and compensating optical impairments in an optical transmitter includes operating an optical transmitter comprising a first and second parent MZ, each comprising a plurality of child MZ modulators that are biased at respective initial operating points. An electro-optic RF transfer function is generated for each of the plurality of child MZ modulators. Curve fitting parameters are determined for each of the plurality of electro-optic RF transfer functions and operating points of each child MZ modulator are determined using the curve fitting parameters. An IQ power imbalance is determined using the curve fitting parameters. Initial RF drive power levels are determined that compensate for the determined IQ power imbalance. The XY power imbalance is determined for initial RF drive power levels using the curve fitting parameters. The operating RF drive powers are determined that at least partially compensate for the first and second IQ power imbalances and for the XY power imbalance for the optical transmitter.

Abstract: Systems and methods presented herein provide for operating an optical network terminal (ONT) during a power outage. In one embodiment, an ONT includes an opto-electrical converter operable to receive an optical signal and to convert the optical signal to a data signal, and a data processing module operable to process data from the data signal. The ONT also includes a power management unit operable to detect a power outage of a power supply, to initiate a low power mode, to terminate a portion of data processing by the data processing module based on the low power mode, to convert the optical signal to electrical power, and to maintain operation of the low power mode utilizing the electrical power. The power management unit is further operable to monitor the power supply for restoration of power, and to reinitialize the data processing module upon restoration of power.

Abstract: A modular fiber optic patch panel system is disclosed. The system includes an enclosure and at least one patch panel module mounted in the enclosure. The enclosure includes a chassis with multiple module bays, each configured to receive a corresponding patch panel module. The patch panel modules each include a module housing, an input connector and an output connector. An optical directional coupler is connected to the input connector and a photodiode is positioned adjacent the optical directional coupler to measure an optical power level conveyed on the optical fiber. A data acquisition device is connected to the photodiode to capture the optical power level data and a microcontroller is connected to the data acquisition device to store the data.
