Abstract: According to an example, an optical transmission device may include a spatial light modulator having a plurality of cells, in which different wavelengths of a light beam are to impinge upon different groups of pixels along a dispersion direction. The device may also include a driver mechanism to modulate, at a first frequency, a first group of the plurality of cells upon which light having a first wavelength impinges to impress a first frequency fluctuation onto a property of an output light including the first wavelength and to modulate, at a second frequency, a second group of the plurality of cells upon which light having a second wavelength impinges to impress a second frequency fluctuation onto a property of an output light including the second wavelength, in which the second frequency modulation differs from the first frequency modulation.

Abstract: Embodiments include systems and methods for scaling power level of an upstream signal by a device processor of a head-end device in a communication network. In embodiments, the device processor may determine a power level of the signal received at the head-end device from a client device. The device processor may determine a difference between the power level of the received signal and a target power level of an analog-to-digital converter of the head-end device, and may adjust the power level of the received signal at the head-end device based on the determined difference. In embodiments, the device processor may determine a power level of an upstream signal to be received by the head-end device, may determine a difference between the power level of the received signal and the target power level, and may adjust the power level of a received signal at the head-end device based on the determined difference.

Abstract: Methods and systems for bias control in an optical switch fabric include monitoring optical power at outputs of a plurality of switch elements in an N×N switch fabric that has N inputs, N outputs, and M≧2 stages. A bias control of a first of the plurality of switch elements is adjusted. It is determined whether the optical power at the outputs of the first switch element after bias control adjustment conform more closely to a predetermined criterion relative to the monitored optical power at the outputs of the first switch element prior to adjustment. The adjusting and determining steps are repeated for each of the remainder of the plurality of switch elements.

Abstract: A method for estimating characteristics of an optical receiver includes: a generating process, a monitoring process, a suppressing process, a guiding process and an estimating process. The generating process generates a modulated optical signal based on an oscillation signal. The monitoring process monitors an optical spectrum of the modulated optical signal or a spectrum of an electric signal obtained by performing optical-to-electrical conversion on the modulated optical signal. The suppressing process suppresses a modulation component of an upper sideband or a lower sideband of the modulated optical signal based on the optical spectrum of the modulated optical signal or the spectrum of the electric signal. The guiding process guides the modulated optical signal in which the modulation component is suppressed to the optical receiver. The estimating process estimates the characteristics of the optical receiver based on an output signal of the optical receiver.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for characterizing and compensating optical impairments in an optical transmitter includes operating an optical transmitter comprising a first and second parent MZ, each comprising a plurality of child MZ modulators that are biased at respective initial operating points. An electro-optic RF transfer function is generated for each of the plurality of child MZ modulators. Curve fitting parameters are determined for each of the plurality of electro-optic RF transfer functions and operating points of each child MZ modulator are determined using the curve fitting parameters. An IQ power imbalance is determined using the curve fitting parameters. Initial RF drive power levels are determined that compensate for the determined IQ power imbalance. The XY power imbalance is determined for initial RF drive power levels using the curve fitting parameters. The operating RF drive powers are determined that at least partially compensate for the first and second IQ power imbalances and for the XY power imbalance for the optical transmitter.

Abstract: A wavelength division multiplexing system and method featuring a wavelength monitor that is configured to receive a portion of a combined signal of wavelength division multiplexing channels and determine the wavelengths of each channel or the guardband between each channel in the combined signal. The wavelength monitor determines if there is excess laser drift for each channel in the combined signal. If excess laser drift is determined, feedback is sent to the transmitter for the signal with excess laser drift and the signal is adjusted to produce a target wavelength. The wavelength monitor may utilize optical intradyning in order to monitor the wavelengths of each channel in the combined signal.

Abstract: Systems and methods presented herein provide for operating an optical network terminal (ONT) during a power outage. In one embodiment, an ONT includes an opto-electrical converter operable to receive an optical signal and to convert the optical signal to a data signal, and a data processing module operable to process data from the data signal. The ONT also includes a power management unit operable to detect a power outage of a power supply, to initiate a low power mode, to terminate a portion of data processing by the data processing module based on the low power mode, to convert the optical signal to electrical power, and to maintain operation of the low power mode utilizing the electrical power. The power management unit is further operable to monitor the power supply for restoration of power, and to reinitialize the data processing module upon restoration of power.

Abstract: A method for determining receiver coupling efficiency includes varying optical power inputted into a half active optical cable to determine a maximum optical power at which the TIA squelches and determining a receiver coupling efficiency by calculating a ratio of a threshold optical power to the maximum optical power at which the TIA squelches. A method of determining link loss in a channel includes varying optical power of a light source to determine the maximum optical power at which the TIA squelches and determining the link loss in the channel by subtracting the maximum optical power from the threshold optical power. A method of determining link topology includes selecting a pattern of optical powers and matching a pattern of squelched and non-squelched outputs with the pattern of optical power. An active optical cable includes memory storing a value related to an initial link loss of the active optical cable.
