Abstract:
A method for producing recombinant adeno-associated virus in the absence of contaminating helper virus or wild-type virus involves culturing a mammalian host cell containing an rAd/AAV hybrid virus, an AAV rep sequence and an AAV cap sequence under the control of regulatory sequences directing expression thereof. The rAd/AAV hybrid virus contains a rAAV construct to be packaged into an AAV virion in an backbone containing the adenoviral sequences necessary to express E1a and E1b gene products and to permit replication of the hybrid virus. The method of the invention permits replication of the hybrid virus and production of rAAV virion in this host cell in the absence of a helper virus and obviates a subsequent purification step to purify rAAV from contaminating virus.
Abstract:
In the manufacture of a link plate for a silent chain, a band of sheet steel is intermittently forwarded to string of punching dies and shaving dies. The band tends to follow a slightly curved path, which causes alignment errors in a conventional punching and shaving operation. However, in this case, each shaving die and its corresponding punching die are disposed in symmetrical relationship with respect to an intermediate position along the path of movement of the band, and the intermediate position coincides with the location at which the deviation of the band. As a result, the shaving dies are more accurately aligned with the punched surfaces produced by the corresponding punching dies.
Abstract:
A composition which elicits antibodies to greater than 95%, and even greater than 99%, of the known variants of HIV-1 Tat protein contains at least one peptide or polypeptide of the formula of Epitope I (based on amino acids 2-10 of HIV-1 Tat consensus sequence) and optionally one or more of a peptide or polypeptide of Epitope II (based on amino acids 41 to 51 of that sequence), of Epitope III (based on amino acids 52-62 of that sequence), or of Epitope IV (based on amino acids 62 through 72 of that sequence with a C-terminal Pro). Vaccinal and pharmaceutical compositions can contain the antibodies induced by the peptide compositions for use in passive therapy. Diagnostic compositions and uses are described for assessing the immune status of vaccinated patients.
Abstract:
There is provided a method of producing hydrogen gas serving as fuel for a portable fuel cell, whereby hydrogen gas can be provided easily, safely, and at a low cost. To that end, the method of producing hydrogen gas comprises the steps of causing friction and mechanical fracture accompanying the friction to occur to a metallic material under water and increasing thereby chemical reactivity of atoms of the metallic material, in close proximity of the surface thereof; wherein water molecules are decomposed by accelerating corrosion reaction of water with the metallic material. Further, for the metallic material, an aluminum or aluminum alloy material is used as industrial waste including refuse and cutting chips (curls) of an industrial aluminum material. Meanwhile, pure water not substantially containing ionic impurities and organic molecules is used for the water.

Abstract:
A wet-type friction engaging apparatus 10 comprises a friction disk 30 which is fitted by spline with a hub 20 and a mating plate 40 which is fitted by spline with a drum D. The friction disk 30 and the mating plate 40 are arranged alternately, and torque is transmitted when the friction disk 30 and the mating plate 40 are engaged with each other. The inner surface of the hub 20 is in a stepped taper shape in order to let lubricating oil B leak from an opening end 26 of the hub 20, and an oil bore 24 is provided in each step in a radial direction of the hub 20. A periphery of an inlet of each oil bore 24 is in a concave shape. During low-speed rotation when centrifugal force is relatively small, the lubricating oil B leaks from the opening end 26 of the hub 20 and drag torque is reduced, and during high-speed rotation when centrifugal force is relatively large, lubricating oil which splashes from a shaft is securely concentrated and then be drained through the oil bore 24.
Abstract:
A chain tensioner comprising a housing, a plunger having racks formed on its opposite sides, a protrusion biasing spring, cams arranged in oblique guide grooves in the housing and engageable with the racks of the plunger, and a spacer supporting a cam biasing spring. The minimum backlash distance X is equal to h/tan θ, where h is the height of the rack teeth, and θ is the angle of the cam guide surfaces relative to the protruding direction of the plunger. The angle θ is between 15° and 70°. The tensioner prevents wobbling noises produced by a timing chain on starting an engine, prevents whistling sounds due to excess tensioning of the chain, and allows backlash to be readily set to accommodate the requirements of a wide variety of engines.
Abstract:
A gas distributor for an ion source includes a plate having a recess and a series of apertures spaced radially outward from the recess. The apertures define paths for the flow of a gas through the plate, and the gas distributor further includes a sacrificial element that is separate from the plate and that is receivable and seats within the recess. The sacrificial element forms an area of the gas distributor that is subjected to erosive forces during normal operations of the ion source, and therefore, prevents erosion of the surface of the plate. The sacrificial element is removable from the plate and replaceable with another sacrificial element during a procedure which neither requires the plate to be removed from the ion source nor the ion source to be disassembled.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a carrier-added copper foil and a print substrate using such copper foil characterized in comprising a resin layer and a functional material layer at least on a part of the copper foil. A carrier-added copper foil and a print substrate using such copper foil are obtained by forming an insulating layer and functional material layer having an area smaller than the area of the copper foil on the surface of the carrier-added copper foil with the screen printing method, thereby improving the handling of such copper foil, preventing the adhesion of contaminants such as resin powder on the copper foil surface during the cutting procedure, preventing scratches and dimples caused by foreign matter, and effectively preventing the generation of scratches, wrinkles and creases during the cutting, packaging and transportation procedures.
Abstract:
A plunger stop for temporarily holding the plunger of a ratchet type chain tensioner in place during installation of the tensioner, or during mounting or removal of the chain, comprises a bifurcated part inserted into a groove in which a pivoted ratchet pawl is situated. The bifurcated part is sandwiched between the pivoted ratchet pawl and a part of the tensioner housing, with the bifurcated part straddling a ratchet pawl-biasing spring in the groove. A grip, which is integral with the bifurcated part protrudes outside the tensioner housing so that it can be grasped manually for removal.
