Abstract:
Articles are provided, having a multilayer structure including (a) a first layer formed from polyolefin and including undercut features formed on and extending from an integral backing; (b) a second layer including an adhesive having a Shore D hardness of greater than 59 when cured; and (c) a third layer including a substrate. The second layer is interlocked with the undercut features, the third layer is adhered to the adhesive, and the second layer is disposed between the first layer and the third layer. A method is also provided including (a) depositing a polyolefin resin into a mold cavity to form a first layer including undercut features; (b) demolding the first layer from the mold cavity at a rate of at least 150 millimeters per minute; (c) applying a curable adhesive to the undercut features to form a second layer attached to the first layer; and (d) attaching a third layer including a substrate to the second layer.
Abstract:
Compositions containing tetrahydrofurfuryl and/or alkyl-substituted tetrahydrofurfuryl esters of citric acid are provided. These esters of citric acid can be formed from renewable materials and can be used, for example, as plasticizers for various polymeric materials. The tetrahydrofurfuryl and/or alkyl-substituted tetrahydrofurfuryl esters of citric acid typically have a low odor, have good compatibility with a variety of polymeric materials, and can be used at temperatures often encountered during hot melt processing of polymeric materials.
Abstract:
An adhesive composition is described comprising a tackifier and at least one grafted isobutylene copolymer. The grafted isobutylene copolymer has the formula: R1—(R2—Z) wherein R1 represents an isobutylene copolymer, R2 is a covalent bond or multivalent alkylene or arylene, and Z is a grafted polymer. Z is typically a homopolymer of copolymer comprising alkene repeat units, aralkylene repeat units, or a combination thereof. Also described are adhesive coated articles, methods of making adhesive coated articles, and grafted isobutylene polymers.
Abstract:
A pressure-sensitive adhesive composition comprises a polyvinyl ether polymer. The polyvinyl ether polymer comprises 2-alkylalkoxyethylene monomeric units independently represented by the formula wherein R1 and R2 represent alkyl groups, and wherein taken together R1 and R2 have from 8 to 30 carbon atoms. An adhesive article comprises a layer of the pressure-sensitive adhesive composition on a substrate.
Abstract:
Pressure-sensitive adhesives that have good performance characteristics under typical use conditions and that later can be degraded and/or removed readily under basic conditions are provided. More specifically, the pressure-sensitive adhesives contain a copolymeric (meth)acrylic-based elastomeric material prepared from a polymerizable material that contains a (meth)acrylate monomer having both a (meth)acryloyl group plus an ester linkage that is not part of a (meth)acryloyl group.
Abstract:
Epoxy compounds that are bisanhydrohexitol derivatives (i.e., isosorbide derivatives, isomannide derivatives, isoidide derivatives, or mixtures thereof) having two terminal oxirane groups are provided. Additionally, curable compositions that include these epoxy compounds, cured compositions prepared from the curable compositions, and articles containing the cured compositions are described. The cured compositions can be used, for example, as a structural adhesive or as a coating.
Abstract:
Fasteners for producing double blind joints where the fastener is not visible or accessible are provided. The fasteners comprise a shape memory polymer that may be used to fasten workpieces by heating the fasteners, inducing recovery of the original, permanent shape of the fasteners.
