    摘要: The present invention is directed toward a free flowing powdered blend of a polysaccharide and a crystalline polyol for use as an edible adhesive for particulate materials such as seasonings and flavorings. The powdered adhesive blend can easily be mixed with seasonings or flavorings and will melt during a heating process to a sticky viscose liquid capable of adhering seasoning particles to the food substrate. The blends of the present invention have the benefits of being easy to prepare, use and store as they will stay a free flowing powder under most ambient conditions.

    摘要: A device for, when connected to a vacuum system, conducting aspiration fluid away from a surgical site includes a conduit having a portion adapted for insertion into the surgical site. The device also includes a flow limiter interposed between the vacuum system and the conduit and in fluid communication with the conduit. The flow limiter has at least two orifices arranged in series and a flow path interconnecting the at least two orifices. The flow path has a flow area that is greater than a flow area of each one of the at least two orifices. Aspiration fluid flows through the conduit and the flow limiter in response to a pressure drop between the surgical site and the vacuum system. The flow limiter produces a non-linear relationship between a rate of aspiration fluid flow and the pressure drop.

    摘要: The present invention relates generally to novel molecules capable of, inter alia, modulating apoptosis in mammalian cells and to genetic sequences encoding same. More particularly, the present invention relates to a novel member of the Bcl-2 family of proteins, referred to herein as “Bmf”, and to genetic sequences encoding same and to regulatory sequences such as a promoter sequence directing expression of Bmf. Bmf comprises a BH3 domain which facilitates interaction to pro-survival Bcl-2 family members thereby triggering apoptosis. Bmf is regarded, therefore, as a BH3-only molecule. The molecules of the present invention are useful, for example, in therapy, diagnosis, antibody generation and as a screening tool for therapeutic agents capable of modulating physiological cell death or survival and/or modulating cell cycle entry. The present invention further contemplates genetically modified animals in which one or both alleles of Bmf are mutated or partially or wholly deleted alone or in combination with a mutation in one or both alleles of another Bcl-2-type molecule such as but not limited to Bim. The genetically modified animals are useful inter alia in screening for agents which ameliorate the symptoms of diseases caused by defects in apoptosis or which specifically promote apoptosis of target cells.

    摘要: Apparatus and method for preforming laser thermal keratoplasty capable of treating treatment areas with shapes that reduce regression. Both contact and non-contact apparatuses and methods are provided. The apparatus includes laser sources, a projection optical system, observation system, and control system. In some embodiments, the projection system uses two steering mirrors or a mask to control laser beam position on the cornea. This projection system enables precise control of the area of corneal heat shrinkage using relatively low-powered lasers, such as diode lasers. Desired changes in corneal refractive power are produced by selected patterns of photothermal shrinkage of corneal collagen tissue. The selected patterns are arrangements of oblong shapes that are preferably tapered at the ends of the long axis. The oblong shape and tapering distribute tension in the cornea over a wider area of collagen shrinkage and improve the stability of refractive correction. The long axes of the oblong treatment areas are preferably oriented radially for hyperopia correction and circumferentially for astigmatism correction.

    摘要: A foldable spectacle frame having two lens frames forming a plane, two temples which are foldable to a thin form in substantially the same plane as the lens frames without lapping over the lens frames. Each of the temples comprises an auxiliary temple member supported by a pivot provided at an outer portion of the lens frames and being movable about the pivot in an auxiliary plane of pivotal movement substantially orthogonal to the plane of the lens frames, and a main temple member pivoted to the auxiliary temple rotatably in a main plane of pivotal movement orthogonal to the auxiliary plane of pivotal movement of the auxiliary temple member. The spectacle frame further comprises a slide member slidably provided within the auxiliary temple and having a length permitting a base end thereof to project from the auxiliary temple member, and biasing means for biasing the slide member away from the pivot when folding the spectacle frame. The pivot includes engaging means for engaging the slide member with the pivot of the lens frames by cooperation of the slide member, the pivot, and the main temple member. The slide member will engage with the pivot when the main temple member is brought into an unfolded state, and will disengage from the pivot when the main temple member or the auxiliary temple member is folded.

    摘要: An adjustable eyeglass bow includes an elongated metal bow and a molded plastic connector seat having a rear end provided with a socket to securely receive one end of the elongated metal bow and a front end provided with a longitudinal blind bore. A washer divides the blind bore into an outer receiving chamber and an inner receiving chamber. A bolt piece is disposed in the blind bore and has a head portion extending into the inner receiving chamber and a threaded end portion passing through the washer and into the outer receiving chamber. A hinge piece includes a shaft portion slidably extending into the outer receiving chamber and having a rear end provided with an axial screw socket to engage the threaded end portion of the bolt piece. The hinge piece further includes a rounded pivot projection formed on a front end of the shaft portion and extending out of the outer receiving chamber to permit the mounting of the adjustable eyeglass bow onto a lens frame. A compression spring is disposed inside the inner receiving space and biases the bolt piece in order to pull the hinge piece inwardly into the outer receiving chamber. No welding operation is employed to assemble the adjustable eyeglass bow, thereby obviating the presence of scars.
