摘要： Disclosed herein are devices and methods for removing tissue. In one aspect, a device for removing tissue includes a hollow elongate member having an outer wall and a lumen, a selectively deployable tissue-cutting element extending from the hollow elongate member, and an actuation member extending through the lumen and coupled to the hollow elongate member at a location that is distal to the tissue-cutting element. Movement of the actuation member can cause the tissue-cutting element to move from the insertion configuration where the tissue-cutting element is not deployed to a tissue-cutting configuration where the tissue-cutting element is deployed such that it is radially extended relative to the insertion configuration.

摘要： Methods and devices are provided for replacing a nucleus of a spinal disc, and in particular for preventing nucleus disc replacement expulsion. The nucleus of a spinal disc can be removed from the annulus by forming a small opening in the annulus. Once the nucleus is removed, one or more insert devices can be implanted within the annulus of a spinal disc and they can be mated to one or both endplates of the adjacent vertebrae. The insert(s) is configured to interact with a nucleus disc replacement implant to prevent expulsion of the implant from the annulus.

摘要： An installation tool that is useful for the efficient and effective placement of an article, such as an artificial disc, between adjacent vertebral bodies is provided. The installation tool can be provided as a kit having modular components which allow the surgeon to select from among a variety of components to assemble an installation tool that is optimized for its intended use. The installation tool of the invention generally includes a pair of opposed levers, each of which has a proximal handle portion and a distal portion. A fulcrum is disposed between the two levers to enable proper operation of the tool. The tool further includes a pusher block that is positioned between the two levers and is selectively movable between an initial location distal of the fulcrum and a final location adjacent the distal end of the levers. The pusher block includes a proximal end, a distal end, and a bore extending at least partially therethrough. A pusher rod, which facilitates movement of a pusher block, has a distal end extending into the bore in the pusher block and a proximal, handle end.

摘要： A tool for installing an object, such as an artificial disk prosthesis, between adjacent vertebrae includes a pair of opposed levers separated by a fulcrum. Blade tips are disposed at the distal end of the levers. A pusher block is disposed distally of the fulcrum, and upon actuation by forward movement of a pusher rod, the pusher block moves the artificial disk prosthesis distally. The blade tips may be inserted between adjacent vertebral bodies as the disk moves forward thus causing the vertebral bodies to be separated until the disk is disposed therebetween. In one embodiment, the length of the blade tips may be selectively adjusted.

摘要： A joint prosthesis comprising a metallic body having a plurality of negative surface features such as through-slots, deep grooves, tunnels or pits, or valleys defined between projecting fingers or flutes. The metallic body constitutes the structural component of the prosthesis, such as a shell, plate or stem. A second part attaches to and extends the body to provide both a fit and a change in the initial stiffness. The second part provides a time-evolving structural coupling, such that the prosthesis initially fits the patient's remnant bone to provide rigid fixation, while the mechanical properties shift with time in vivo to change its contact or loading characteristics. In one embodiment a femoral stem joint prosthesis is modular and the first, or structural component, accommodates bio-absorbable second components of varying geometries and dimensions which fit a range of bore sizes, and achieve different stiffnesses or strengths affecting load or strain distribution.

摘要： A modular knee prosthesis includes a femoral component having a pair of laterally spaced apart condylar portions each having a superior, articulation surface and an inferior surface. A boss structure is disposed between and connects the condylar portions. The boss structure has an inferior surface that extends generally horizontally in the transverse plane, and an opposed superior surface. The boss structure has an aperture having a selected configuration formed therein and which extends between the inferior and superior surfaces. The boss structure has formed on the superior surface thereof a positioning structure, e.g., a plurality of grooves, that define one or more positions, in the transverse plane, in which to seat a femoral stem assembly. A washer is mountable upon the superior surface of the boss structure and over a portion of the boss aperture. The washer includes at least one detent that cooperates with the positioning structure to secure the washer in one of the mounting positions.
