A wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network including optical lines for link is disclosed. The passive optical network includes a plurality of optical network units each of which generates an upstream optical signal; a central office for generating downstream optical signals to be provided to each of the optical network units, and differentially converting each of the upstream optical signals into a monitoring signal and a received signal. Changes in the wavelength of each of the upstream optical signals are monitored and if there is an abnormality in each optical line by using relevant monitoring signals. The network also includes a remote node for multiplexing and outputting the upstream optical signals to the central office, and demultiplexing and outputting the downstream optical signals to corresponding optical network units.

A second gain medium pumped by another input pump light in order to output a second amplified spontaneous emission through both ends thereof. A reflector disposed between the opposite ends of the first and second gain mediums to reflect the input first and second amplified spontaneous emissions. The first and second amplified spontaneous emissions output from the first and second gain mediums are then output to the outside through first and second output terminals.

The optical modulating apparatus includes an optical modulator to modulate an optical carrier using a bias signal; and a bias controller to adjust the bias signal of the optical modulator by detecting a second harmonic signal of the modulated optical signal, setting a minimum point of the second harmonic signal as a reference bias voltage, and then comparing a magnitude of the second harmonic signal that changes according to an external environment with a magnitude of a signal generated from the reference bias voltage.

An EML transmitter having a band stop filter to improve the transmission characteristics before and after the transmission is provided. This is achieved by improving the chirp characteristics and the extinction ratio during the transmission of optical signals using an EML. The inventive EML transmitter includes: an EML for generating transmission light; a first lens for focusing optical signal outputs from the EML to prevent loss of the optical signals; a second lens for focusing the optical signals into a core portion of an optical line; and, a band stop filter for removing the D.C. component from the optical signals outputted by the EML.
