Olefins are polymerized by novel transition metal complexes of selected iminocarboxylate and iminoamido ligands, sometimes in the presence of cocatalysts such as alkylaluminum compounds or neutral Lewis acids. Olefins which may be (co)polymerized include ethylene, &agr;-olefins, and olefins containing polar groups such as olefinic esters for example acrylate esters. Also described are certain “Zwitterionic” transition metal complexes as polymerization catalysts for making polar copolymers. The resulting polymers are useful as thermoplastics and elastomers.

Polyethylene is formed by contacting ethylene with a novel iron or cobalt complex of a selected 1,4,7-triaza-3-oxa-1,4,6-heptatriene or 2,5,8-triaza-1,8-nonadiene, optionally in the presence of a cocatalyst such as an alkylaluminum compound. The polymers formed as useful for molding and in films.

Selected olefins such as ethylene and &agr;-olefins are polymerized by nickel [II] complexes of certain monoanionic ligands. The polyolefins are useful in many applications such as molding resins, film, fibers and others. Also described are many novel nickel compounds and their precursors, as well a novel ligands.
