A process for producing peroxydicarbonates comprising first reacting at least one inorganic peroxide with at least one alkali metal hydroxide to form at least one alkali metal peroxide. The at least one alkali metal peroxide is added to a mixture of at least one haloformate, at least one dispersant and water. The mixture is homogenized during the entire reaction to form a peroxydicarbonate. The peroxydicarbonate is dispersed as small droplets of from 1 to 10 microns in size in the aqueous mixture. The entire mixture is added to a polymerization reactor containing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer. The peroxydicarbonate functions as the free radical initiator to polymerize the monomer. The peroxydicarbonate is substantially free of organic solvents and plasticizers. The resulting polymers are of high quality.

Supported stereospecific catalysts and processes for the stereotactic propagation of a polymer chain derived from ethylenically unsaturated monomers which contain three or more carbon atoms or which are substituted vinyl compounds, such as styrene and vinyl chloride. One application is the stereospecific propagation of C3-C4 alpha olefins, particularly the polymerization of propylene to produce syndiotactic polypropylene over a supported metallocene catalyst comprising a stereospecific metallocene catalyst component incorporating a metallocene ligand structure having two sterically dissimilar cyclopentadienyl ring structures coordinated with the central transition metal atom. Both of the cyclopentadienyl groups are in a relationship with one another by virtue of bridge or substituent groups, which provide a stereorigid relationship relative to the coordinating transition metal atom to prevent rotation of said ring structures. The metallocene catalyst component and a co-catalyst component, an alumoxane or an alkyl aluminum, are supported on a particulate silica support comprising spheroidal silica particles having an average diameter within the range of 5-40 microns and an average effective pore size within the range of 50-350 angstroms. The particulate silica support contains at least 50 wt. % of the supported catalyst component within the pore volume of the silica support.

A batch process for the anionic polymerization of a styrenic monomer is described. The process brings together a liquid saturated hydrocarbon diluent, an ether promoter, an organolithium initiator and a styrenic monomer in such a way so as to maintain the reaction mixture at or below about 55° C. and so that the amount of organolithium initiator employed is in the range of about 1 to about 10 mol %, based upon the total amount of styrenic monomer to be added. Favorable polydispersity and molecular weight polymer characteristics are obtained.

Supported metal halides and metal halide solid acids are used as catalysts for the polymerization of a feed stream containing at least one of pure monomer, C5 monomers, and C9 monomers to produce hydrocarbon resins. Freely-associated water may be removed from the solid acid catalyst prior to use. Resins with softening points (Ring and Ball) in the range of about 5° C. to 170° C. can be prepared. These catalysts offer advantages over the traditional Friedel-Crafts polymerization catalysts since the acid sites are an integral part of the solid. The solid acid catalysts are relatively nonhazardous, reusable catalysts which eliminate or at least reduce contamination of the resulting resin products with acid residues or by-products.

The present invention relates to a process of preparing syndiotactic styrenic polymers with a high conversion rate in the form of fine powder, which comprises (a) preparing styrenic polymers in a solid state by reacting a mixture consisting of styrenic monomers, a metallocene catalyst, a cocatalyst and inert organic solvent in a polymerization reactor, (b) separating a portion of the styrenic polymers from the reactor, (c) recycling the portion of the styrenic polymers in the reactor, and (d) reacting the recycled styrenic polymers with styrenic monomers. The styrenic monomers may include olefinic monomers. The monomers can be introduced to a single inlet or multiple inlets of the reactor. A single reactor or a plural number of reactors can be operated in the present invention. The plural numbers of reactors are arranged in series or in parallel. In the present invention, a self-cleaning mono- or twin-axis reactor can be employed to prevent the polymers from agglomerating on the inner wall or the axis. Alternatively, a cylindrical reactor can be employed, where the styrenic polymers are transported in a solid or powder state rotating in a certain direction at the range of Froude Number of from 0.1 to 10 and polymerization proceeds toward the exit of the reactor.
