Transition metal complexes of selected monoanionic phosphine ligands, which also contain a selected Group 15 or 16 (IUPAC) element and which are coordinated to a Group 3 to 11 (IUPAC) transition metal or a lanthanide metal, are polymerization catalysts for the (co)polymerization of olefins such as ethylene and null-olefins, and the copolymerization of such olefins with polar group-containing olefins. These and other nickel complexes of neutral and monoanionic bidentate ligands copolymerize ethylene and polar comonomers, especially acrylates, at relatively high ethylene pressures and surprisingly high temperatures, and give good incorporation of the polar comonomers and good polymer productivity. These copolymers are often unique structures, which are described.

The present invention relates to a method for producing a high-molecular-weight copolymer of polar group-containing allyl monomers comprising monomer units represented by formulae (3) and (4) (in the formulae, R1 represents a hydrogen atom (H) or hydrocarbon group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R2 represents —OH, —OCOR3 (R3 represents hydrocarbon group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms), —N(R4)2 (R4 represents a hydrogen atom or hydrocarbon group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms); and n and m are a value representing the molar ratio of each of the monomer units), which has few branches and unsaturated group at the molecular end, by copolymerizing olefin and an allyl compound using a metal complex of group 10 elements in the periodic system represented by formula (I) as a catalyst.The present invention enables providing a high-molecular-weight copolymer of polar group-containing allyl monomers, which copolymer has a novel structure, is available for various applications and has been considered to be difficult to synthesize by other polymerization methods such as radical polymerization; and a method for producing the same.

A process for emulsion polymerizing one or more olefins involves reacting it/them with at least one complex compound of the formula Ia or b where M is a transition metal from groups 7 to 10 of the Periodic Table of the Elements and is preferably Ni in aqueous dispersion and at least one radical R1 to R3 and optionally one radical R4 to R9 contains a hydrophilic group X, selection being made from —SO3−, —O—PO32−, NH(R15)2+, N(R15)3+ or —(OCH2CH2)nOH, where n is an integer between 1 and 15. For the process of the invention it is optional to use an activator such as, for example, olefin complexes of rhodium or of nickel. This invention further relates to dispersions of polyolefins such as polyethylene and ethylene copolymers in water, for example, and to the use of the aqueous dispersions of the invention for paper applications such as paper coating or surface sizing, paints, adhesive base materials, molded foams such as mattresses, textile and leather applications, carpet back coatings, or pharmaceutical applications.

Mixtures of different polyolefins may be made by direct, preferably simultaneous, polymerization of one or more polymerizable olefins using two or more transition metal containing active polymerization catalyst systems, one of which contains nickel complexed to selected ligands. The polyolefin products may have polymers that vary in molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, crystallinity, or other factors, and are useful as molding resins and for films.
