The transmission mode can be one of a preceding, space division multiple access (SDMA), SDMA preceding, multiple input multiple output (MIMO), MIMO preceding, MIMO-SDMA and a diversity. A method for allocating resources in a wireless communications environment comprises receiving a mapping between a first hop-port and frequency range, and determining whether to map a second access terminal to a second hop-port that is mapped to at least the same frequency range during a substantially similar instance in time, the determination made as a function of characteristics relating to a first access terminal associated with the first hop-port. The method can further include determining that the first access terminal is a candidate for employing Space-Division Multiple Access (SDMA), and mapping the second-hop port and associating the second access terminal with the second hop-port when the second access terminal is also a candidate for employing SDMA.

In particular, the energy efficiency can be based at least in part on an estimated pathloss and/or a level of interference related to communicating with the access points. Moreover, load parameters related to the access point can be received and evaluated in selecting and/or reselecting the access point. Thus, access points can be selected or reselected based on parameters other than forward link transmit power. In addition, pathloss and/or interference levels can be weighed based on access point type to prevent macrocell overloading.

According to another example, frequency hopping can be constrained to use of resources within a resource set (rather than across more than one resource set) as provided in a base station specific hopping pattern.

Techniques for sending signaling information using hierarchical coding are described. With hierarchical coding, individual messages for users are encoded using multiple interconnected encoders such that (1) the message for each user is sent at a data rate suitable for that user and (2) a single multicast message is generated for the messages for all users. A base station determines data rates supported by the users and the code rates to achieve these data rates. Each data rate is determined by one or more code rates. Signaling information for the users is mapped to data blocks to be sent at different data rates. Each data block is then encoded in accordance with the code rate(s) associated with the data rate for that data block. A final coded block is generated for all users and transmitted. Each user performs the complementary decoding to recover the message sent to that user.

Estimation of channel characteristics and interference level in a time-varying multi-carrier multi-user systems is carried out concurrently. To perform the estimation, a multitude of data symbols and dedicated pilot symbols are transmitted over the channel. Next, an initial estimate value is selected for the interference level. The initial estimate value for the interference level is used together with the received pilot symbols to provide a first estimate of the channel. The first estimate of the channel is used to determine a new updated value for the interference level, which in turn, is used to update the value of the first estimate of the channel iteratively. The iterations continue until the iteratively updated values of the interference level and channel satisfy predefined limits. The data symbols and the final updated value of the channel are subsequently used to provide a second estimate for the channel.

In one aspect, a method for flexibly allocating a shared frequency spectrum to a plurality of users comprises the acts of fixedly assigning a first group of clusters to a first group of users, such that the first group of users stay fixed to the assigned clusters, and assigning a second group of clusters to a second group of users, such that the second group of users hop within the assigned clusters.
