Methods of recovering information encoded in a spread spectrum signal transmitted according to a spreading sequence in a communications medium are provided in which a spread spectrum signal is received from the communications medium and correlated with a spreading sequence to produce a plurality of time-offset correlations. Some of these time-offset correlations may be designed to cancel out known interfering signals. A subset of the plurality of time-offsets may then be selected, and corresponding traffic correlations may then be combined using a weighted combination to estimate information encoded in the transmitted spread spectrum signal. Receivers for implementing these methods are also provided.

An improved system and method for rate detection of transmitted signals is disclosed for use in a IS-95 CDMA downlink. For each speech frame, one of four possible bit rates is used to encode the frame according to the standard. The present invention describes a receiver and various processes that are able to detect which rate was sent without the aid of flag bits or other mode indication information. According to various embodiments of the invention different rate detection processes which can exploit additional code information, such as CRC checks and convolutional coding, are disclosed.

According to the present invention, the effects of the transmission medium on transmitted information symbols are estimated separately from other effects, e.g., those associated with receive and transmit filters, using knowledge of the pulse shaping. The medium response estimate is then used to detect information symbols. Previously, receivers had used estimates of the composite channel to detect symbols. This, however, assumed uncorrelated noise, which is not always the case.

Methods and apparatus for receiving adjacent channel signals wherein adjacent channel interference effects are minimized through joint demodulation of the adjacent channel signals. A channel associated with each signal and each corresponding frequency band is estimated and used to form joint branch metrics for joint sequence estimation. In an exemplary embodiment, a baseband processor receives baseband samples corresponding to at least one carrier frequency, and then jointly demodulates at least two information streams corresponding to different carrier frequencies in dependence upon the received baseband samples. In another embodiment, a joint channel estimator receives at least two baseband sample streams, each stream corresponding to a different frequency band, and jointly estimates medium responses for each of at least two information signals which were transmitted in different frequency bands.

The handling of emergency calls, e.g., 911 calls, should be performed on an expedited basis. In radiocommunication systems, knowledge by the mobile unit that an emergency call is being placed can be used to expedite and optimize emergency call handling. Various techniques are described herein to identify emergency calls when placed by a mobile user. Moreover, the provision of auxiliary alarm functions for the mobile unit are also described.

Orthogonalization techniques are disclosed which can be used, for example, to improve subtration of CDMA signals from a composite spread spectrum signal or to improve detection of CDMA signals from the composite spread spectrum signal. According to exemplary embodiments, a Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization process is used to modify signature sequences which are each associated with a particular CDMA signal in the spread spectrum composite signal. These modified signature sequences can then be used to spread correlations of the original signature sequences in the subtraction process or in the detection process to improve performance. Pre-orthogonalization according to the present invention, eliminates or mitigates multiple access interference.
