摘要: A multi-layer microporous battery separator which comprises: a high molecular weight polypropylene layer having a melt flow index of ≦1.2 measured at layer; a polyethylene layer; and a high molecular weight polypropylene layer having a melt flow index of ≦1.2 measured at layer. The resulting microporous battery separator which is formed by a dry stretch process produces the microporous battery separator which has a porosity of ≦37% while maintaining a gurley from 13-25 seconds and a thickness of ≦25 microns.

摘要: A contained liquid membrane contactor includes a perforated center tube, first and second membrane mats each with a first and a second end both being open, four tube sheets affixing the membrane mats to the center tube, a shell sealed to the tube sheets, and two end caps. The first end of the first mat extends a first distance beyond the second end of the second mat. The first end of the first mat is open at the first tube sheet while the first end of the second mat is open at the second tube sheet. The second end of the first mat is between the second and fourth tube sheets and the second end of the second mat is between the first and third tube sheets. The shell has a first port between the first and third tube sheets communicating with the second end of the second mat and a second port between the second and fourth tube sheets communicating with the second end of the first mat. The first end cap has a third port communicating with the center tube and a fourth port communicating with the first end of the first mat. The second end cap has a fifth port communicating with the center tube and a sixth port communicating with the first end of the second mat.

摘要: 2. A composite for forming an improved semi-solid state electrolyte. The composite has a layer formed including lithium metaphosphate (LiPO3). The layer may include a mixture of LiPO3 and PEO. The composite may be wet with liquid electrolyte to form the semi-solid state electrolyte. When used in a semi-solid state battery, the semi-solid state electrolyte provides beneficial results, including improved cycle life and less lithium dendrite growth. Another composite for forming an improved semi-solid state electrolyte has a layer formed including LiTaO3 and LiNbO3. Yet another composite has a single layer formed to include a mixture of a polyethylene oxide and a lithium-containing salt, including a lithium salt including niobium, tantalum, or mixtures thereof. Such composites may be wet with liquid electrolyte to form the semi-solid state electrolyte. When used in a semi-solid state battery, the semi-solid state electrolyte provides beneficial results, including improved cycle life and less lithium dendrite growth.

摘要: A monolayer, bilayer, trilayer, or multilayer porous membrane having at least one layer that contains a thermoplastic resin and a polymer that is incompatible with the thermoplastic resin. One structure is a multilayer porous membrane where at least one internal layer of the multilayer porous membrane contains the thermoplastic resin and the polymer that is incompatible with the thermoplastic resin. Higher amounts of incompatible polymer may be used in an internal layer. This structure has improved properties, including improved puncture strength. Another structure includes at least one layer containing polyethylene and a polymer that is incompatible with polyethylene. The at least one layer containing polyethylene and a polymer that is incompatible with polyethylene may be an internal layer or an external layer. An internal layer may include more incompatible polymer than an external layer. The porous membranes may be used as battery separators. For example, they may be used as battery separators in secondary batteries such as lithium ion secondary batteries.

The preferred inventive coating has excellent thermal and chemical stability, excellent adhesion to microporous base substrate, membrane, and/or electrode, improved binding properties to ceramic particles and/or has improved or excellent resistance to thermal shrinkage, dimensional integrity, and/or oxidation stability when used in a rechargeable lithium ion battery.

摘要: The present invention relates in at least selected embodiments to novel or improved microporous battery separators for lithium rechargeable batteries and/or related methods of making and/or using such separators. A particular inventive dry process battery separator or membrane separator exhibits a thickness that is less than about 14 μm and has increased strength performance as defined by reduced splittiness. The mode of splitting failure has been investigated, and the improvement in splittiness quantified by a novel test method known as the Composite Splittiness Index (CSI).

摘要: A porous membrane having a cross-linked ceramic coating on at least one side thereof is disclosed. The coated porous membrane may be used as a battery separator, particularly a battery separator for a lithium ion battery. The coating includes at least a cross-linker and a ceramic. The cross-linker may be a particulate polymeric binder cross-linker, a PEO (PEG) cross-linker, or a POSS cross-linker. The coated membrane exhibits improved properties that may be favorable for its use as a battery separator. For example, the coated porous membrane may exhibit improved shrinkage properties and high temperature resistance.
