Abstract: Example implementations may relate to determining a strategy for a drop process associated with a light detection and ranging (LIDAR) device. In particular, the LIDAR device could emit light pulses and detect return light pulses, and could generate a set of data points representative of the detected return light pulses. The drop process could involve a computing system discarding data point(s) of the set and/or preventing emission of light pulse(s) by the LIDAR device. Accordingly, the computing system could detect a trigger to engage in the drop process, and may responsively (i) use information associated with the environment around the vehicle, operation of the vehicle, and/or operation of the LIDAR device as a basis to determine the strategy for the drop process, and (ii) engage in the drop process in accordance with the determined strategy.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure provide for evaluation of a planned trajectory for an autonomous vehicle. For instance, for each of a plurality of objects, a predicted trajectory may be received. The planned trajectory may identify locations and times that the vehicle will be at those locations. For each of the plurality of objects, a grid including a plurality of cells may be generated. Occupancy of each grid for each of the plurality of objects may be determined based on the predicted trajectories. A cell of each grid which will be occupied by the vehicle at a location and time of the planned trajectory may be identified. The planned trajectory may be evaluated based on whether any identified cell is occupied by any of the plurality of objects at the time.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on a computer storage medium, for planning the future trajectory of an autonomous vehicle in an environment. In one aspect, a method comprises obtaining multiple types of scene data characterizing a scene in an environment that includes an autonomous vehicle and multiple agents; receiving route data specifying an intended route for the autonomous vehicle; for each data type, processing at least the data type using a respective encoder network to generate a respective encoding of the data type; processing a sequence of the encodings using an encoder network to generate a respective alternative representation for each data type; and processing the alternative representations using a decoder network to generate a trajectory planning output that comprises respective scores for candidate trajectories that represent predicted likelihoods that the candidate trajectory is closest to resulting in the autonomous vehicle successfully navigating the intended route.

Abstract: One example method involves generating a calibration control signal that causes an actuator to rotate a first platform at least one complete rotation about an axis. The method also involves receiving encoder output signals. The encoder output signals are indicative of angular positions of the first platform about the axis. The method also involves receiving sensor output signals from an orientation sensor mounted on the first platform. The sensor output signals are indicative of a rate of change to an orientation of the orientation sensor. The method also involves determining calibration data based on given sensor output signals received from the orientation sensor during the at least one complete rotation. The calibration data is for mapping the encoder output signals to calibrated measurements of the angular positions of the first platform about the axis.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure relate to determining a next vehicle task for a vehicle of a fleet. Vehicle data from the vehicle, charger data about at least one charger, and demand data may be received and used to determine the next vehicle task. The vehicle may be directed to the next vehicle task. Determining a next vehicle task may further be based on predictions made using the vehicle data, the charger data, and the demand data. Heuristics may also be used in determining a next vehicle task.

Abstract: Example embodiments described herein involve reducing the formation of ice on external modules by incorporating a heater within the module. The system may include a microphone module for an autonomous vehicle. The microphone module may include a housing and a microphone inside an opening of the housing. The system may further include a cover abutting the opening of the housing. The cover may enclose the microphone within the housing and seal the opening of the housing. The system may also include a heater adjacent to the opening of the housing and configured to prevent ice from forming over the opening. The heater may at least partially surround the opening.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure relate to testing situational awareness of a test driver tasked with monitoring the driving of a vehicle operating in an autonomous driving mode. For instance, a signal that indicates that the test driver may be distracted may be identified. Based on the signal, that a question can be asked of the test driver may be determined. A plurality of factors relating to a driving context for the vehicle may be identified. Based on the determination, a question may be generated based on the plurality of factors. The question may be provided to the test driver. Input may be received from the test driver providing an answer to the question.
