A size composition for glass fibers is disclosed. The composition consists essentially of an aqueous dispersion of a polyvinyl alcohol, a water dispersible cationic epichlorohydrin polyamide copolymer and a flocculent polymer. The polyvinyl alcohol has a degree of hydrolysis ranging from 85 percent to 90 percent and a molecular weight such that a 4 percent by weight aqueous solution thereof has a viscosity of from 4 to 6 centipoises. The cationic epichlorohydrin polyamide copolymer is one wherein the polyamide can be based upon diethylene triamine. The flocculent polymer is a medium-high to high cationic polymer or copolymer having a quaternized amine function. The polymer or copolymer is of at least 40 percent by weight of a monomer having an acrylic function and an amine function where the acrylic function is acrylate or methacrylate, any co-monomer being an acrylamide. The quaternized copolymer has a molecular weight sufficiently high that a 1 percent solution thereof in water has a Brookfield viscosity from 1200 to 1600 centipoises.

Glass fibers are coated with a formulation containing vinyl polymer. 2-10% by weight of an amine compound is added to the vinyl polymer. A typical formulation contains 100 pts. PVC, 6 pts. undecyl benzyl phthalate, 21 pts. tri-o-phosphate, 21 pts. epoxidized tall oil ester, 4 pts. paste aluminum pigment, 2 pts. Sb2O3, a heat stabilizer, a barium-cadmium coupler, an ulta violet stabilizer, and a hydrocarbon thinner. The amines may be vinyl pyrrolidone monomer, propylamine, polyvinyl pyrrolidone acrylamide, aminopolyethylene, polyvinyl pyridine, polyacrylonitrile, hexamethylenediamine, and diphenyl guanidine.

The invention relates to a fibrous mat facer for preparing a gypsum board, to a gypsum board comprising said mat facer and to a system comprising said gypsum board. The fibrous mat comprises at least one ply of a non-woven fabric, and a binder composition, wherein the binder composition represents from 10 to 40 wt % of the total weight of the mat. The binder composition comprises a copolymer comprising a co-monomer unit of a vinyl ester of an alpha branched aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, said copolymer being present in an amount from 25 to 100 wt % of the binder composition weight.
