摘要: A curable aqueous binder has two primary components. The first component is a bio-based material or mixture of bio-based materials such as starch or polyvinyl alcohol. The second component is one or more compounds selected from the group of urea, polyurea and substituted urea. The first and second components make up most (i.e. 50% or more) of all solids in the binder. The dry weight of the second component is preferably 25% or more of the dry weight of the first component. The solids content of the binder is preferably between 6 wt % and 20 wt %. A method of making a mineral fiber product includes a step of curing a binder as described above in situ on a mass of mineral fibers at a temperature of 175 degrees C. or more. A preferred binder is a mixture of urea and starch in a ratio by weight between 50-50 and 80-20 in water at a solids content of 10-20 wt %, substantially without other components, and may be used as a replacement for formaldehyde or petrochemical based resins. The starch is preferably cooked, thermoplastic or nanoparticle starch.

摘要: A glass adhesion composition containing a copolymer having an acid and a substituted amide, silanol, or amine oxide functionality. The substituted amide, silanol, or amine oxide functionality provide excellent adhesion of the copolymer to glass, silica, sand and other silicon-based substances. The copolymer is useful as a fiberglass binder, and also useful in providing protective coatings on glass sheets. A fiberglass sizing composition is also provided having a copolymer that includes at least one acid group derived from at least one acid monomer, a hydrophobic comonomer, and a crosslinker. Additives can be added to the compositions to provide other functionality such as corrosion inhibitors, hydrophobic additives, additives for reducing leaching of glass, release agents, acids for lowering pH, anti-oxidants/reducing agents, emulsifiers, dyes, pigments, oils, fillers, colorants, curing agents, anti-migration aids, biocides, plasticizers, waxes, anti-foaming agents, coupling agents, thermal stabilizers, flame retardants, enzymes, wetting agents, and lubricants.

摘要: An aqueous glass fiber sizing composition that includes a polymeric film forming component, at least one silane coupling agent, and one or more lubricants is provided. The polymeric film forming component of the sizing composition includes a silanated polyvinyl acetate, an epoxidized polyvinyl acetate, and a modified epoxy emulsion. In preferred embodiments, the film formers are present in the sizing composition in ratios of 70:25:5, 50:25:25, or 63:18:18 of silanated polyvinyl acetate, epoxidized polyvinyl acetate, and modified epoxy emulsion respectively. Fibers sized with the sizing composition in a sheet molding compound process have improved wet-out characteristics.

摘要: This unique processing provides a unique mixture for coating reinforcements. Preferably, the mixture is an epoxy/polystyrene mixture developed for coating glass fiber reinforcements for thermoset resins such as polyesters. My processing threads a glass fiber roving through a series of threaders, eyelets and brakes. The glass then is coated and dried. After drying, the roving then is wrapped around chilled mandrels and chopped into an appropriate length. The coating is critical to the performance and cosmetic appearance of the part (molded product). The fiber after processing then is introduced into the resin matrix. The processing strips or shears the after coating from the fiber prior to molding.
