Abstract: A method for embossing indicia such as numbers, letters, or other symbols into an article of malleable material such as a thin sheet or web by providing an anvil which has the appropriate indicia defined by a plurality of individual protuberant dots, positioning the article against the anvil in contact with the protuberant dots, and applying an ultrasonically vibrating horn to the article and forcing it against the dots to form indentations. Relative translational movement can be effected between the horn and the article when the indicia cover a greater area than the surface of the horn. The horn can be non-rotating, or can rotate along the surface of the article. The method is particularly applicable to the marking of photographic film and paper.

Abstract: A fly''s eye lens arrangement is formed in a transparent substrate having a first group of ions by electromigration of a second group of ions through a plurality of apertures in a masking film formed on one surface of the substrate. Electromigration of the second group of ions into the substrate results in the formation of elongated regions in the substrate having a higher index of refraction than the surrounding substrate. Heat is then applied causing diffusion of some of the second group of ions into the substrate and some of the first group of ions into the regions. Each of these regions comprises an individual lens which has a maximum index of refraction along the central axis of the region and in which the index of refraction decreases in a direction outward toward the surrounding substrate.

Abstract: A motion-picture projector is adapted for the employment of a film cartridge of such a type as containing a film supply reel with the film trailing end secured thereto, and a take-up core with the film leading end secured thereto, which core is separable from the cartridge housing through a recess built up in one end of the cartridge. The housing is preferably made from two molded half sections, one of which is formed with an opening through which a film rewinding spindle of the projector is engageable with the film supply reel, and the other being provided on the inner surface and at a portion corresponding in position to the opening on one of the half sections with a support for supporting the film supply reel to be held in such a manner that at least a portion of spindle hole of the reel appears in the opening formed on one of two half sections. The cartridge is initially set in a first position in the projector in which the spindle of the projector engages the supply reel, and then transferred to a second position due to rotation of a reel supporting member of the projector having said spindle mounted thereon. In the second position, the take-up core is gripped by a gripper on a take-up transferring member, so that upon the rotation of the take-up core transferring member the take-up core is transferred with the film leading end to a film winding position.

Abstract: A cartridge for a strip of flexible material, preferably film, adapted for use with a projector having automatic feed-out means, basically comprising a reel receptacle and a cover. The receptacle has a substantially planar back portion. The cover fits over the receptacle to substantially enclose a reel, and has a substantially planar front portion. A feed-out aperture is provided in the cartridge to permit the entry of feed-out means into the cartridge and the egress of flexible strip material out of the cartridge. An arcuate guide extends within the cartridge from one end of the feed-out aperture annularly within the reel receptacle to the opposite end of the feed-out aperture and is positioned to penetrate the space between the flanges of the reel. Locking tabs and apertures are provided to interlock several cartridges together in a stacked relationship and for attaching the cartridge to the projector. Abstract: A threading device is provided for use with a motion picture projector of the type adapted to receive a roll of film upon a rotatable spindle which may be inside a cartridge. The threading device includes a support member that is adapted to be moved into contact with a received cartridge to align and firmly hold the cartridge in position. The threading device further includes a member having a hook portion that is adapted to be moved through an opening in the wall of the cartridge and into close proximity with the roll where it engages an opening in the leading end portion of the rotating roll of film. After the film is engaged by the hook member, the hook extracts the leading end of the film from the cartridge and delivers it to transport means of the projector. The hook is then disengaged from the film and moved to a retracted position to avoid interfering with the normal operation of the projector.
