This novel approach includes use of a combination of layers of coating materials at certain thicknesses and applied with certain techniques. In certain embodiments, the coating system includes coatings applied to a pretreated substrate, e.g., blasted steel cargo hold plates of an oceangoing vessel. The coatings include a bond layer and a resistance layer, e.g., an anti-corrosive layer tailored to resist at least one of corrosion, erosion, impact and wear of the substrate.

The invention is directed to high purity zirconia-based and/or hafnia-based materials and coatings for high temperature cycling applications. Thermal barrier coatings made from the invention high purity material was found to have significantly improved sintering resistance relative to coatings made from current materials of lower purity. The invention materials are high purity zirconia and/or hafnia partially or fully stabilized by one or any combinations of the following stabilizers: yttria, ytterbia, scandia, lanthanide oxide and actinide oxide. Limits for impurity oxide, oxides other than the intended ingredients, that lead to significantly improved sintering resistance were discovered. High purity coating structures suitable for high temperature cycling applications and for application onto a substrate were provided. In one structure, the coating comprises a ceramic matrix, porosity and micro cracks. In another structure, the coating comprises a ceramic matrix, porosity, macro cracks and micro cracks. In another structure, the coating comprises ceramic columns and gaps between the columns. In another structure, the coating comprises ceramic columns, gaps between the columns and nodules distributing randomly in the gaps and columns.

The present invention provides a standard interface for providing mechanical location, mechanical orientation, electrical connections, and water chamber seals for the exchange of a variety of plasma forming nozzles each associated with a specific plasma plume characteristic. The flexibility of the nozzle attachment is improved over prior designs by providing a standard exterior nozzle configuration and nozzle clamping assembly on the plasma gun so that multiple nozzles configurations (giving different plasma flow properties) can easily be used with the same devices. The joining of the nozzle to the receptacle forms a channel for cooling liquid to flow from the plasma gun through the nozzle to a return path in the plasma gun and creates an electrical contact between the plasma gun and the nozzle.

The surfaces (20) of the granular core particles carry functional layers (22) which form an intermediate phase of the composite which is stable at a high operating temperature. The intermediate phase in this process has been produced in situ at least in part by a chemical reaction of a precursor material (22′) and material (21) of the granular core particles on the particle surfaces (20). Bonds (23) are formed between the granular core particles arranged in a porous composite by the intermediate phase. These bonds have a breaking characteristic for abradables.
