    Abstract: Various modified carbon products are disclosed which can form a part of a polymeric product containing the modified carbon product and a polymer. One type of modified carbon product disclosed is a carbon product having attached at least one organic group, monomeric group, or polymeric group. Another type of modified carbon product disclosed is a carbon product having attached a group having the formula: --Ar--CO.sub.2 --R or --(--C.sub.n H.sub.2n --)--CO.sub.2 --R, where R is an organic group, monomeric group, or a polymeric group. The third type of modified carbon product contains a) a carbon product having attached at least one organic group directly attached to the carbon product, b) at least one ionic group, ionizable group, or a mixture thereof attached to the organic group, and c) at least one counter-ionic group or counter-ionizable group with at least one organic group, monomeric group, or polymeric group, or mixture thereof, where the counter-ionic or counter-ionizable group is attached to the ionic and/or ionizable group. A method of improving the dispersion of carbon products in polymers is also disclosed which involves dispersing the modified carbon products described above in a polymer to form a polymeric product.

    Abstract: A sensor or a sensor array connected to an electrical measuring apparatus is disclosed. In one embodiment, at least one sensor contains a layer of conductive modified particles which forms an electrical pathway or electrical circuit between two electrodes which are connected to an electrical measuring apparatus. In another embodiment, the first sensor contains at least one region of a nonconducting material and also a region that contains one or more modified particles. The modified particles are preferably conductive. An electrical path exists though the regions of the nonconducting material and the region containing the modified particles. The modified particles are conductive and more preferably are pigment particles such as modified carbon black, wherein the modified particles have attached at least one organic group. Alternatively, or in addition, the modified particle can be an aggregate having a carbon phase and a silicon-containing species phase and/or a metal-containing species phase wherein the aggregate optionally has attached at least one organic group. A sensor array for detecting an analyte in a fluid is also disclosed wherein each sensor emits a different response signature to an analyte wherein at least one of the sensors contains at least the modified particles as described above. Also, the present invention relates to a method for detecting the presence of an analyte in a fluid. The method involves contacting one or more sensors as described above with the analyte to generate a response and detecting the response with a detector that is operatively associated with each sensor in order to detect the presence of an analyte.     Abstract: A gyricon display containing modified particles is disclosed. The gyricon display has an arrangement of bichromal or polychromal elements which are disposed between a first and second electrode. One of the electrodes is substantially visually transparent. The display also has means for creating a potential difference between the two electrodes. Also, each bichromal element has two hemispheres, wherein one of the hemispheres has at least a surface containing at least one modified colored pigment having attached at least one organic group and the other hemisphere has at least a surface with a different color and different electrical property. The organic group preferably includes at least one ionic, ionizable group, or both. Each bichromal or polychromal element is enclosed within a shell wherein a liquid is present between the shell and the element so that the element is free to rotate in response. Methods of making the gyricon display are also disclosed.
