    摘要： The use of raffinose as a glass-forming agent for freeze-dried compositions intended for use in conducting chemical or biochemical reactions such as the PCR. Thus, for instance, there is provided a composition for carrying out a chemical or biochemical reaction, said composition being in a freeze-dried form and comprising (i) a set of reagents comprising at least some of the chemical or biochemical reagents necessary for conducting said chemical or biochemical reaction, and (ii) raffinose. Kits comprising these compositions and methods of using them form a further aspect of the invention.

C. to -40.degree. C. The oil medium is characterized by the absence of surfactant which can catalyze ice formation and is an immobile gel at the storage temperature. The preferred oil 10 medium is paraffin oil, or oil plus paraffin wax.

    摘要： Materials which are not themselves storage-stable at room temperature are made suitable for storage by mixing them with a carrier substance and spray drying the resulting mixture so as to form particles containing both the material and the carrier substance in which the carrier substance is in an amorphous, i.e. glassy or rubbery, state. Formation of such a composition greatly enhances stability. The material stored may be a biological material such as an enzyme, the components of a chemical reaction such as reagents for carrying out an assay, or even viable biological cells.

    摘要： A face masque that applies cooling therapy to facial features of a patient. The masque is formed of two nylon or plastic layers that define a closed interior space and filled with a cooling medium that includes water, glycerin and hydroxyethyl cellulose. The masque controls the rate of heat dissipation from a user based upon the heat capacity, mass, rheology and composition of the materials used. The masque is lighter than conventional water-filled ice packs. It remains unfrozen and malleable even when cooled to sub-zero temperatures at which water-filled packs would freeze solid. The masque readily conforms to facial features due to the materials used, thereby contributing to improved comfort on the part of a user. Further, the masque possesses improved cooling therapy because it remains cold for longer periods of time relative to water-filled ice packs. Optionally, the masque accommodates eye inserts placed between a main body of the masque and recesses of the patient's eyes. Also, the masque may be provided with a cloth sheath separating the nylon or plastic layers from the patient's face.
