A novel method for improving the meat quality of an animal is provided. In one embodiment, the method comprises feeding the animal a diet supplemented with oleic acid and tocols and subsequently formulating the meat with a non-tocol antioxidant such as rosemary extract. The source of the oleic acid and/or tocols may be transgenic corn that employs the FAD-2 gene as a silencing agent for a high-oleic phenotype and/or expresses the HGGT gene for a high-tocotrienol phenotype. The method improves the quality of meat from both non-ruminants and ruminants.

A method for producing a chewing gum, as well as the chewing gum so produced, incorporates a physiological cooling agent, such as acyclic carboxamide, or combinations of physiological cooling agents. In another embodiment a combination of physiological cooling agents is made in a modified release structure. The modified release/cooling agents combination is preferably obtained by physically modifying the properties of the combination of cooling agents by coating and drying. When incorporated into gum, these particles are adapted to enhance the shelf stability of the flavor and/or produce a modified release when the gum is chewed. In another embodiment, the physiological cooling agent is present with menthol and menthone.In another embodiment, coated chewing gum has a coating that comprises a physiological cooling agent. The preferred inventive chewing gum provides a high flavor impact in which the harsh notes normally associated with such a high flavor impact have been reduced or eliminated. In addition, the preferred inventive gum provides a clean, high-quality, cooling chewing gum coating with xylitol or other polyols where xylitol has been reduced in concentration or eliminated.

Improved chewing gum formulations and bases, as well as methods of producing chewing gum and bases are provided. The chewing gum includes meadowfoam seed oils from the plant genus Limnanthes. Meadowfoam seed oils can be used in the base and/or gum as a plasticizer. In an embodiment, meadowfoam oil is added to sucrose-type gum formulations replacing a small or large quantity of other fats, oils, and waxes. A variety of base and chewing gum formulations including meadowfoam oil can be created and/or utilized pursuant to the present invention.

Chewing gums containing gum talha and methods of making such gums are disclosed. In one embodiment, the gum comprises about 5% to about 95% gum base, about 0.1% to about 10% flavoring agent and gum talha, the gum talha being part of the bulking agent in the gum. The gum talha provides the gum with unique properties, and the gum is non-cariogenic. In another embodiments, the gum talha is codried with sweeteners or coevaporated with a plasticizing syrup to produce unique sweetening ingredients and syrups for gum. The gum talha may also be provided in the form of a rolling compound on the gum, or used with sugars or polyols to form a hard coating for a coated pellet gum.

Thermoplastic elastomer blends containing polyvinyl chloride having improved oil resistance, exceptionally low compression set and softness are made by mixing a polyvinyl chloride-acrylate copolymer with effective amounts of cured acrylate elastomers. A process of increasing squalene and sterol accumulation in a transgenic plant by increasing the amount of a gene encoding a polypeptide having HMG-CoA reductase activity is disclosed. The amount is preferably increased by transforming plant cells with a recombinant DNA molecule comprising a vector operatively linked to an exogenous DNA segment that encodes a polypeptide having HMG-CoA reductase activity, and a promoter suitable for driving the expression of said polypeptide to form a transformed plant cell and regenerating a transgenic plant from that transformed cell. Also disclosed are a process of increasing pest resistance in a transgenic plant, transgenic plants and transgenic seeds capable of germinating into transgenic plants.
