The invention relates to a process for coating a surface through graft polymerization, characterized in that before graft polymerization, the surface is modified, in the presence of an amine of formula: wherein R1 is hydrogen or a group R4, R2 and R3 are each independently a group R4, and R4 is [-1,2-C2-C3alkylen-T-]n-H wherein T is O or NH and n is a number from 1 to 3, by a compound having a functional group: wherein R5 to R7 are each C1-C4alkyl. The amount of amine is preferably from 5 to 500 g/m2 of surface of the substrate particle. The amount of the trialkoxysilane compound is preferably from 0.1 to 2 g/m2 of surface of the substrate particle. The process for coating a surface is particularly useful for effect pigments.

A pigment composition, which comprises70-95% by weight of a pigment of formula ##STR1## 5-15% by weight of at least one C.sub.2 -C.sub.16 alkylenedicarboxylic acid-di-C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl ester; and0-15% by weight of at least one C.sub.12 -C.sub.24 fatty acid ester of polyhydroxy-C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 alkane;each based on the total weight of the pigment composition.Also claimed is a process for the preparation of this pigment composition and its use for mass-colouring in particular high molecular weight organic materials which can be moulded as plastics or melts.The products obtained are distinguished by an improved low shear dispersibility effect at high tinctorial strength.

A process for stabilizing bismuth vanadate pigments against attack by hydrochloric acid by treating said pigments with a metal phosphate, which process comprises treating an aqueous suspension of a bismuth vanadate pigment with 2-20% by weight, based on said pigment, of an orthophosphate selected from the group consisting of calcium, magnesium, aluminium, zirconium and titanium orthophosphate, of a mixture of such orthophosphates with one another or of such orthophosphates with zinc orthophosphate, with stirring, in the temperature range from 20.degree. to 100.degree. C. and in the pH range from 2 to 8, which orthophosphate is precipitated in situ from the appropriate metal salt of a strong mineral acid and orthophosphoric acid or from an alkali metal salt thereof, and isolating the resultant product by conventional methods.The pigments so obtained have excellent resistance to hydrochloric acid.
