    摘要： A method for dispensing or depositing particulate material includes accumulating particulate material in a nozzle having an opening at the bottom for discharging the particulate material, and applying positive air pressure to a buffer chamber positioned in communication with the accumulation of particulate material to start and control the flow of particulate material through the opening and applying negative pressure to the buffer chamber to stop the flow of particulate material. An unobstructed interface can exist between a surface of the particulate material and air in the buffer chamber. In one embodiment, roofing shingle granules are applied intermittently to a moving coated asphaltic sheet through a slot to form strip roofing shingles.

    摘要： A method and apparatus for applying granules to a coated asphalt sheet to form at high production speeds a variegated pattern having uniform edges between areas of different colored granules. Granules of a first color or color blend are applied to spaced first areas on a moving, tacky, asphaltic strip by dropping the granules onto the moving strip. The leading and/or trailing edges of each granule drop are trimmed off by cutting or deflecting to provide predetermined sharp leading and/or trailing edges to the first areas. Granules of a second color or color blend are then deposited on the strip by dropping on tacky second areas between the spaced first areas. If desired, one or both edges of the second color granule drops also may be trimmed, the second color granules may be deposited on only a portion of the tacky strip areas between the spaced first areas, and additional color granules may be applied to the remaining tacky areas to form shingles with three or more colored areas.

    摘要： The method for applying granules to a moving coated asphalt sheet includes selecting blend drop areas on the sheet, the remainder of the sheet comprising background areas, depositing background granule drops on portions of the background areas such that the background granule drops have generally sharp leading edges which define upstream edges of the blend drop areas and have generally fuzzy trailing edges, depositing blend drops on the blend drop areas such that the blend drops have generally sharp leading edges and generally fuzzy trailing edges which overlap the background granule drops, and then depositing background granule drops on remaining portions of the background areas. The generally sharp leading edges of the background granule drops define the trailing edges of the blend drops so that when blend drops which overlap the background granule drops are removed by inverting the sheet, blend drop areas having sharp leading and trailing edges are produced.

The reinforcement member is formed from a material selected from the group consisting of paper, film, scrim, woven, and non-woven material. The reinforcement member and the portion of the headlap portion to which the reinforcement member is secured to improve nail pull-through. At least some of the reinforcement member does not overlap the overlapping regions of the headlap portion and the underlay sheet. Said reinforcement member provides said overlay sheet with a non-uniform thickness.
