    摘要: The present invention encompasses an apparatus for pumping a vibronic laser, which comprises: a transition-metal ion-containing solid state vibronic laser gain medium; a means for exciting said laser medium to emit coherent radiation said exciting means being a pumping source comprising at least one laser diode operating at a wavelength shorter than 750 nm; and an optical resonator means for generating and controlling said coherent radiation. The present invention also encompasses a method of pumping a vibronic laser comprising the steps of: generating a laser diode pumping beam at a wavelength shorter than 750 nm; exciting a transition-metal ion-containing solid state vibronic laser gain medium by impinging said laser diode pumping beam on said transition-metal ion-containing solid state laser gain medium, so as to excite the laser medium; and an optical resonator to emit coherent radiation.

    摘要: Device for providing a train of light pulses at Raman shifted frequency comprises a first ring laser (for fundamental frequency) and a second ring laser (for Raman shifted frequency). Both ring laser intersect in a Raman laser medium which is common to the cavity of both ring lasers. The Raman cavity has output means partially transmissive at Raman frequency. Length of first and second ring laser cavities differs by .DELTA.L. Injection of a fundamental pump pulse and a small Raman seed pulse into their respective cavities results in output of a train of Stokes pulses.

Polarization preserving single-mode fiber lengths (26), (28) connect all-fiber polarization splitter (18) with the Faraday single-mode fiber lengths (22), (24). Polarization preserving single-mode fiber lengths (30), (32) connect the opposite ends of Faraday single-mode fiber lengths (22), (24) with all-fiber polarization splitter (20). A communication transmitter is connected to splitter (18) at port 1, and a communication receiver is connected to splitter (18) at port 3. A fiber optic communication link (50) is connected to splitter (20) at port 2. The components of optical circulator (16) cooperate such that light transmitted into port 1 exits from port 2, and light transmitted into port 2 exits from port 3.

A reflection rhomb (17) includes a polarizing thin film (26) and an inclined, internally reflecting end surface (22). A first birefringent crystal (28) is disposed against the reflection rhomb (17). A quartz rotator (34) is disposed against the opposite side of the first birefringent crystal (28). A Faraday rotator (40) is disposed against the opposite side of the quartz rotator (34). A second birefringent crystal (46) is disposed against the opposite side of the Faraday rotator (40). The components of optical circulator (16) cooperate such that light transmitted into port 1 exits from port 2, and light transmitted into port 2 exits from port 3.
