    Abstract: A water filter device for treating untreated drinking water, wherein the water filter device may comprise a connector for providing fluid communication between the water filter device and an untreated drinking water source. The water filter device may comprise a low-pressure water for treating untreated drinking water, the water filter may comprise a water filter material. The water filter may comprise a F-BLR of greater than about 2 logs. The water filter device may comprise a storage housing in fluid communication with the low-pressure water filter. The water filter device may comprise an automatic shutoff valve for arresting the flow of treated drinking water into the storage housing. The water filter device may comprise a dispenser for dispensing treated drinking water from the storage housing. The treated drinking may enter into the storage housing at the rate of at least about 5 mL/min until activating the automatic shutoff valve, such that the flow of treated drinking water into the storage housing is arrested. The water filter device may be a non-electric water filter device.

    Abstract: A synthetic firelog is made by binding cellulosic particles with a combustible binder produced by the interaction of a liquid combustible by-product or waste product and a modifier, the resulting material being such as to be carbonizable on combustion to form a porous skeleton which maintains the shape of the log during burning. The by-product may be molasses, various waste oils or pitches, or sulphite lye and the modifier interacts physically or chemically therewith to form a plastic, thixotropic binder material. The cellulosic material may be sawdust, paper, or any of a variety of cellulosic residues from the processing of vegetable materials.

    Abstract: A filter cartridge end-of-life mechanism and a filter cartridge assembly for a water treatment device. The end-of-life mechanism comprises a float which is moved along an escapement path each time the device is filled. A counting mechanism connected to the float provides a continuous visual indication of the amount of useful life remaining in the filter cartridge. The cartridge assembly includes a tray detachably connected to a filter cartridge. The tray is positioned beneath the outlet end of the cartridge to remove water treatment particles from the treated water.

    Abstract: A cartridge for treating water, the cartridge capable of releasably engaging a water treatment device. The cartridge includes a housing, an inlet for introducing untreated water into the cartridge, an outlet port for egress of treated water from the cartridge, and a treatment media for treating untreated water The treatment media is in fluid communication with the inlet and the outlet port.
