A vibration damping material which is a composite material comprising an organic polymer as matrix and a flake filler dispersed in the polymer matrix. The orientation of the filler flakes is controlled such that the major surfaces of the individual flakes are at an angle of 0.degree..+-.30.degree. with a predetermined plane. The vibration damping material is used to form a damping layer on a surface of the object of vibration damping. In the case of vibration damping of the extensional type using only the damping layer, the aforementioned plane is parallel to the major surfaces of the damping layer. In the case of providing a constraining layer on the damping layer the aforementioned plane is normal to the major surfaces of the damping layer. The flake filler is usually an inorganic material and may be coated with an organic polymer. This vibration damping material features large values of loss modulus when used in the extensional manner and large values of dynamic loss factor when used in the constrained manner over wide ranges of temperature and frequency.

Disclosed is a fiber of an organic, inorganic or metallic material or a simple substance wherein ultrafines of an inorganic or metallic material or a simple substance having an average particle diameter of 0.005-1 .mu.m are uniformly dispersed and deposited on 8-90% of the surface in a single layer. The fiber is produced by exposing a fiber of an organic, inorganic or metallic material or a simple substance to a gaseous stream forming ultrafines of an inorganic or metallic material or a simple substance by a vapor phase process, thereby contacting said ultrafines in the gaseous stream with said fiber in a state wherein the ultrafines are still active. The treated fiber is useful as a reinforcing material for a fiber reinforced composite.

A centrifugal fluidized grinding apparatus having balls as a grinding medium therein, comprises a parting vessel having a vertical axis, composed of inner and outer vessel parts both forming a circumferential groove. The circumferential groove has a continuous and smooth surface and provides a completely open inner space allowing the grinding medium and starting material to move freely through any part of the entire area of the inner space without encountering any obstacles. The groove has a generally ovoid profile with an upper part thereof cut away in a vertically cross-sectional view taken along a plane including the axis. The ovoid has a longitudinal axis intersecting the vertical axis at a position over the parting vessel. The inner and outer vessel parts are mounted for relative rotation about the vertical axis, in such a manner that the inner vessel part is rotated while the outer vessel part is stationary, or the latter is rotated in a reverse direction. The groove is covered, but the balls are forced to fly from a groove surface part, formed by the outer vessel part, to land tangentially on an opposite groove surface part, formed by the inner vessel part, in a parabolic flight course below the covering.

The coated particle is produced by introducing the particles of the inorganic or metallic material to be coated into a stream carrying the ultrafines of the inorganic or metallic material formed in a vapor phase and bringing the particles to be coated into contact with said ultrafines in a fluidized state. The coated particles are used for the production of a sintered product.
