Abstract: Fiber-containing composites are described that contain woven or non-woven fibers, and a cured binder formed from a binder composition that includes (1) a reducing sugar and (2) a crosslinking agent that includes a first carbon moiety selected from an aldehyde, a ketone, a nitrile, and a nitro group, wherein an α-carbon atom having at least one acidic hydrogen is directly bonded to the first carbon moiety. Exemplary reducing sugars include dextrose and exemplary crosslinking agents include glyoxal. Exemplary fiber-containing composites may include fiberglass insulation.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present technology may include a method of reducing leaching from a fiber-containing composite. The method may include forming an aqueous dispersion of fibers. The method may further include applying a binder composition to the aqueous dispersion of fibers to form a binder-fiber mixture. The binder composition may include a carbohydrate, a nitrogen-containing compound, and a catalyst that catalyzes the reaction between the carbohydrate and the nitrogen-containing compound. The catalyst may be water soluble before curing but water insoluble after curing. In addition, the method may include curing the binder-fiber mixture to form the fiber-containing composite.

More specifically, the present disclosure relates to polymeric resin materials that include a filler that includes of a mixture of cured rubber granules, foam granules, and/or textile fibers. The filler can be suspended in and/or encapsulated by the polymeric resin material. The polymeric resin material, the filler, or both can include waste or scrap material from manufacturing or from ground post-consumer waste.

Abstract: (A) A reinforcing fiber, (B) a resin particle, and (C) a matrix resin are combined to prepare a resin composition which improves a reinforcing effect by the reinforcing fiber. The reinforcing fiber (A) contains a carbon fiber. The resin particle (B) contains a semicrystalline thermoplastic resin, the semicrystalline thermoplastic resin in the resin particle (B) has an exothermic peak in a temperature range between a glass transition temperature of the semicrystalline thermoplastic resin and a melting point of the semicrystalline thermoplastic resin, the peak being determined by heating the resin particle (B) at a rate of 10° C./min. by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and the resin particle (B) has an average particle size of 3 to 40 μm. The semicrystalline thermoplastic resin may be a polyamide resin having a melting point of not lower than 150° C. (particularly, a polyamide resin having an alicyclic structure and a glass transition temperature of not lower than 100° C., or a polyamide resin having a γ-type crystal structure or a degree of crystallinity of not more than 50%). The matrix resin (C) may be a thermosetting resin.

Abstract: A molding material is provided including a composite having 1 to 50 wt % of (A) a bundle of continuous reinforcing fibers and 0.1 to 40 wt % of (B) a polyarylene sulfide prepolymer or (B′) a polyarylene sulfide; and 10 to 98.9 wt % of (C) a thermoplastic resin adhered to the composite; wherein the composite further has (D) a zero-valent transition metal compound or (E) a low-valent iron compound in an amount of 0.001 to 20 mol % based on the amount of sulfur atoms contained in the component (B) or (B′). A prepreg and a method of producing a fiber-reinforced molding base material is also provided. By using the molding material according to the present invention which exhibits excellent economic efficiency and productivity, a molded article having excellent mechanical characteristics can be easily produced.

Abstract: The present invention includes a hydrogel and a method of making a porous hydrogel by preparing an aqueous mixture of an uncrosslinked polymer and a crystallizable molecule; casting the mixture into a vessel; allowing the cast mixture to dry to form an amorphous hydrogel film; seeding the cast mixture with a seed crystal of the crystallizable molecule; growing the crystallizable molecule into a crystal structure within the uncrosslinked polymer; crosslinking the polymer around the crystal structure under conditions in which the crystal structure within the crosslinked polymer is maintained; and dissolving the crystals within the crosslinked polymer to form the porous hydrogel.

Abstract: In order to simplify the equipment for heating a thermosetting resin or a thermoplastic resin and to reduce manufacturing costs of a molded resin article by saving energy, this resin composite material (1A-1I) is formed by combining a fibrous reinforcing material (2) and a thermosetting or thermoplastic matrix resin (3), wherein a metal nanomaterial (4) which self-heats after absorbing electromagnetic waves is added to the matrix resin (3). The frequency of the electromagnetic waves is preferably within the range of 3 MHz to 3 GHz. The metal nanomaterial (4) is preferably nanofibers or nanocoils, and the material is preferably platinum or gold.
