摘要: A multi-user touch-responsive viewing screen is described which uses frustrated total internal reflection in a slab of transparent material to illuminate the contact point between the slab and a finger or other object substantially matching the slab's index of refraction. Light, coupled upon touch, can be detected with a video camera, and used to determine both the position and pressure of the touch. Multiple touches can be accommodated and each touch accurately located. Projected images can be applied to the slab and a diffuser to construct an interactive touch screen.

摘要: A system (300) for combining a panning camera (308) with one or more displays (304), such as head-mounted displays, is provided. A panoramic view from an electronic panning camera may be provided to an electronic panning control circuit (510). The electronic panning control circuit may be responsive to a view selector (306), such as a head-tracker located on a user's HMD. The electronic panning circuit selects the desired portion of the panoramic view to send to the user's display. A stereoscopic, view providing for a depth-of-field effect simulating actual vision, stereo view is achieved by locating a first electronic panning camera (502) in an optically horizontally offset relation with a second electronic panning camera (504). An image splitter (510), such as a half silvered mirror, sends the same, slightly horizontally offset, to both cameras. Individually pannable views may be delivered to users via a communications network (312). One or more electronic panning cameras may output stereoscopic views to a communications network using high bandwidth lines (because the electronic panning cameras typically output a signal having a bandwidth equivalent to several video signals). The panoramic views may be received by local central offices (806) which include electronic panning circuits responsive to users' HMDs. The desired portions of the stereoscopic view may be extracted and sent to the user via conventional video bandwidth lines (because the selected views are typically equivalent to one or two video signals).

摘要: A novel video object extraction has a first object 12, such as a foreground object, illuminated with visible light 16 and a second object 14, such as a background object, illuminated with a combination of infrared 18 and visible light 16. A novel camera system observes the scene. The novel camera system includes an infrared light camera 24 and a visible light camera 20. The infrared light camera output 24 contains bright images of the second object 14, with relatively little brightness of the first object 12. The signal from this infrared light camera 20, once thresholded, serves as a key to remove the second object 14 from the video image captured by the visible light camera 20.

摘要: A capacitive detection and display device and method is used to simultaneously detect and display an image of an object hidden behind an obscuring surface. An electrode applies an electric field to a chamber having a visual display material which is located between the electrode and the obscuring surface. A sensitivity enhancement device is located within the electric field between the chamber and the obscuring surface to increase the sensitivity of the detection and display device and increase its depth of penetration through the obscuring surface. In one embodiment, the sensitivity device comprises an array of sensitivity electrodes formed on a nonconductive substrate. The shape of a hidden object is visually displayed by the visual display material.

摘要: There is presented a system and method for producing art electronically. In one embodiment, an electronic art system comprises an electrically sensitive art surface, an art brush having bristles, a voltage reference coupled to the bristles of the art brush, and an at least lightly conductive liquid for moistening the bristles. An electrical pattern formed by an interaction between a plurality of the moistened bristles of the art brush executing a brushstroke and the electrically sensitive art surface, resulting in production of an image of the brushstroke. In other embodiments, the electronic art system can comprise one or more of a camera configured to capture an optical image of the brushstroke, a conductive micro-screen providing a residual image of the brushstroke, a position detection unit for identifying the location of the brushstroke on the electrically sensitive art surface, and a computer to process and produce the image of the brushstroke.

摘要: Disclosed is a virtual display (300) which provides a wide field-of-view that is lightweight and may be as thin as ordinary eyeglasses. One version of the invention includes a display (302), such as an LCD, a microlens array (304), and an aperture array (306) disposed between the LCD and the microlens array. The virtual display provides a pin-point of light for each pixel (306) of a display (302). Each pin-point of light in collaboration with an associated microlens (308) generates a directed ray of light. The ensemble of these rays forms a coherent image on a viewer's retina. Using high "f" number microlenses permits a very short focal length between the pin-points and the microlenses and thus provides a very thin virtual display. The aperture array may be provided by a plate disposed between the display and the lens, or it may be apertures configured on the back side (away from the viewer) of the microlenses or on the front (towards the viewer) of the display. Each aperture in the array receives light from one pixel and directs a pin-point of that light to a microlens in the microlens array. Each microlens receives a single pin-point and directs the resulting ray so that a coherent image is formed on the viewer's retina.
