An aqueous coating composition including the acrylic emulsion polymer, a method for improving the scrub resistance of a dry coating, a method for improving the adhesion of a dry coating, and a method for improving the adhesion of a dry coating to an alkyd substrate are provided.

    摘要: An aqueous composition suitable for use, when dry, as an improved coating is provided including an aqueous emulsion polymer, the polymer having a glass transition temperature (Tg) from greater than 20° C. to 80° C., formed by the free radical polymerization of at least one ethylenically unsaturated nonionic acrylic monomer and 0-7.5%, by weight based on the total weight of the polymer, ethylenically unsaturated acid monomer in the presence of 0.01-1.0%, by weight based on the total weight of the polymer, t-alkyl hydroperoxide, t-alkyl peroxide, or t-alkyl perester wherein the t-alkyl group includes at least 5 Carbon atoms and, optionally, at least one other oxidant. A method of preparing the emulsion polymer, a method for providing a coated substrate wherein the coating contains the emulsion polymer having a Tg from −20° C. to 80° C., and a method for improving the scrub resistance of a coating by including the emulsion polymer having a Tg from −20° C. to 80° C. are also provided.

    摘要: According to the present invention, aqueous multi-stage polymer dispersions comprising an acid-functional first polymer and an epoxy-functional second polymer, wherein 90 mole % or more of the said epoxy groups, based on the moles of epoxy groups in the monomer mixture used to form the second polymer, are retained in the aqueous dispersion after said dispersion is stored in a sealed container for 10 days at 60° C. Further, methods of making the aqueous multistage polymer dispersion comprise polymerizing the monomers used to make the second polymer in the presence of an aqueous dispersion of the first polymer. Preferably, the second polymer is formed in the presence of 0.3 wt. % or less, based on the total weight of the first polymer and the ingredients to form the second polymer, of one or more strong acid surfactant, and 3) 0.1 wt. % or less, based on the total weight of the first polymer and the ingredients to form the second polymer, of one or more initiator that contains strong acid groups or generates strong acid groups under the conditions of aqueous emulsion polymerization. The aqueous dispersions provide non-toxic, odor free storage stable coating compositions that form coatings having excellent film toughness and hardness.
