Abstract: A commercially viable paper wrapped foam cup comprising a taper portion that prevents the shrinkage-induced curling from interfering with the un-nesting of nested paper wrapped foam cups. The paper wrapped cup further comprises a fillet for strengthening the cup foot to retard shrinkage-induced curling of the foot. The paper wrapper has abutting to overlapping opposing ends to completely hide the foam cup to enhance the visual appearance of the cup. The overlapping portions of the paper wrapper are not bonded to each other to prevent wrinkling of the paper wrapper as the cup shrinks. A machine and corresponding method provide for automatically supplying foam cups and paper wrappers, wrapping the paper wrapped cup, and stacking the wrapped cups.

Abstract: A novel method and mold apparatus for testing adhesion of cord or wire in rubber which measures "intrinsic" adhesion, i.e. adhesive strength independently of the tearing strength and stiffness of the rubber matrix. Each test specimen is formed of two uncured preformed or premolded blocks, called coupons, in respective preform molds. Two wire segments are inserted coaxially between the coupons in preformed grooves and the assembly is molded and cured. The proximate ends of the segments are buried in or embedded within the body of the specimen, but spaced apart along the axis of the wire segments and the body of the test specimen. The specimen is stressed only by the wire segments. In an Instron or like test machine, the free ends of the wire segments are pulled at a selected rate to failure. Failure of the adhesion is observed to start at the embedded end of the wire segment and progress outwardly along the segment which is pulled from the body or matrix. The force required is recorded and the maximum observed force, together with the otherwise determined rubber stiffness, provides a measure of the intrinsic face-to-face adhesion of the particular wire to the particular rubber. A preferred mold apparatus provides mold plates useful both in preforming the coupons and in mold curing the specimens.

Abstract: A removable track for a tire having at least one sealing member interposed between the annular belt of the track and the traction shoes clamped on the belt. The sealing member is under compression and has a surface of highly compressible material to conform to irregularities in the track assembly for sealing the space between the traction shoes and the belt. The sealing member may be of rubber or plastic foam so that during compression and decompression the space occupied by the sealing member may decrease and increase while the sealing member maintains a sealing relationship with the traction shoes and belt. The sealing member may also be adhered to the belt-engaging surface of a traction shoe or to the belt. Further, the sealing member may be positioned between adjacent traction shoes with overhanging ribs of the shoes engaging the transverse edges of the sealing member to hold it in position and compress the edges. Grooves may be provided at the transverse edges of the sealing member for interaction with the overhanging ribs of adjacent traction shoes.

Abstract: A take-apart wheel rim and disc assembly for use in a safety tire and wheel assembly which includes a pneumatic tubeless tire. The wheel includes an inboard rim part, a wheel mounting disc having an outer marginal flange telescoped into and secured to the inboard rim part, the disc flange having an outer surface protruding axially outboard beyond and clear of the inboard rim part. An outboard rim part telescopically received from an axially outboard direction over the disc flange, an O-ring seal disposed between the disc and opposing surfaces of the inboard and outboard rim parts, and a clamp ring for axially clamping the outboard and inboard rim parts together with the O-ring captured in compression between the disc and the opposing surfaces of the rim parts to seal against air leakage. The disc has an air bleed vent structure outboard of the O-ring and normally sealed from the tire cavity by the O-ring. The clamp ring and associated fasteners engage and exert clamping stress on the outboard rim part over a range of relative movement therebetween in the axial direction relative to the inboard rim part which is sufficient to permit loss of sealing pressure at the O-ring prior to loss of clamping engagement to thereby permit air leakage past the O-ring through the air bleed vent structure to atmosphere within the range of relative movement.

Abstract: A reinforcing cord is positioned in a mold cavity for reinforcing an annular article such as a tire by wrapping the cord on an annular spacer band which is supported on a mold core and then placed in the mold. The mold is charged with a liquid polyurethane reaction mixture to form an outer polymeric ring of the annular article which is adhered to the cord and partially cured. The spacer band is removed, the mold closed and charged with additional liquid polyurethane reaction mixture to form an inner polymeric ring of the annular article adjacent the reinforcing cord carried by the outer ring. The partially cured outer ring and the inner ring are then cured to adhere the inner ring to the outer ring with the layer of reinforcing cord encapsulated between the rings. An additional layer of reinforcing cord may be positioned in the article by wrapping another cord around a second spacer band having a smaller diameter than the first spacer band. The second spacer band is placed in a mold and defines a cavity between the spacer band and the outer ring. The mold is then charged with additional liquid reaction mixture to form the second polymeric ring and encapsulate the cord on the second spacer ring and partially cure the second ring for adherence to the first ring. The second spacer band is then removed and the mold charged with additional liquid reaction mixture to form the radially innermost third polymeric ring. The reaction mixture of the second and third rings are then cured to provide adherence between the adjacent rings.
