For the production of polyalkenamers there are provided catalysts consisting essentially of a catalyst system for the ring-opening polymerization of cyclic olefins consisting essentially of (1) a tungsten or molybdenum compound; (2) an organoaluminum compound; and (3) an ether of vinyl alcohol, of allyl alcohol, or of 2-butene-1,4-diol, the molar ratio of component (1) to component (2) being less than 1 : 1 and the molar ratio of component (1) to component (3) being less than 100 : 1. The catalyst system may also contain a compound containing one or more hydroxyl or sulfhydryl groups in a molar ratio to component (1) of about 0 : 1 to 2 : 1, respectively.

Novel adhesion promoters having, on the one hand, groups capable of forming a stable chemical bond with the surface of silicic acids and silicates (siloxane bond) and, on the other hand, groups capable of forming, during vulcanization, a stable chemical bond with an elastomer (sulfur bridges) are provided. They are consequently suitable as adhesion promoters for the production of vulcanizates exhibiting a favorable filler/elastomer bond. They are oligosulfanes of the formula(RO).sub.3 Si--Y--S.sub.x --Y--Si(OR).sub.3wherein R, Y and x are defined herein, or a mixture of an oligosulfane of this formula (main product) and of a structurally related, substantially dimeric condensation product, which is characterized by a siloxane bond (by-product).

The invention relates to the use of polymethylalkanes having terminal methyl groups and methylene and ethylidene groups of the formula I ##STR1## in which the total number of C atoms n+2 m+2 is 20 to 100 and the ratio of the methyl and methylene groups to the ethylidene groups is 3 to 20:1 and the ethylidene groups are always separated by at least one methylene group, as biodegradable base oils for lubricants and functional fluids. Suitable polymethylalkanes are obtained by oligomerization of .alpha.,.omega.-diolefins, for example in particular according to P 41 19 332.6, or by pyrolysis of ethene/propane copolymers and subsequent hydrogenation in each case. The polymethylalkanes can be combined with conventional additives and other degradable or non-degradable base oils.

A method of manufacturing methylidene-group-containing .alpha.,.omega.-unsaturated oligomers from .alpha.,.omega.-diolefins in the presence of a catalytic amount of organoaluminum compounds, wherein the .alpha.,.omega.-diolefins are reacted in the liquid phase, at 150.degree.-350.degree. C., and the organoaluminum compounds have formula AlX.sub.3 or AlX.sub.2 H, where X represents an aliphatic, alicyclic, or aromatic hydrocarbon group with 1-30 C atoms. The higher molecular weight hydrocarbons manufactured according to this method are substantially linear oligomers which contain reactive double bonds.
