摘要: An extendable enclosure for circuit cards provides the capability for a customer to purchase a low cost system up-front, but still allow for growth. The extendable enclosure for circuit cards comprises a first enclosure comprising a backplane, a plurality of circuit card connectors, the backplane providing electrical connectivity among the plurality of circuit card connectors, a midplane connector mounted to the backplane, the midplane connector providing electrical connectivity to the backplane, and a backplane connector mounted to an edge of the backplane and providing electrical connectivity to the backplane and a second enclosure comprising a backplane, a plurality of circuit card connectors mounted to a face of the backplane, the backplane providing electrical connectivity among the plurality of circuit card connectors, and a backplane extension connector mounted to an edge of the backplane and providing electrical connectivity to the backplane, wherein the backplane extension connector is operable to plug into the backplane connector of the first component enclosure.

摘要: Architecture for a SONET network element. The architecture includes an interconnection system for a network element, including a line unit slot, a switch fabric slot, and service unit slots. The line unit slot is connected as a hub to the switch fabric slot and the service unit slots in a first star interconnection configuration. The switch fabric slot is connected as a hub to the line unit slot and the service unit slots in a second star interconnection configuration. The star interconnection configurations provide fault isolation between different units, and allow for replacement of failed units without interfering with the links of other units to the hub. A service unit is provided including a first backplane interface for connecting with an ATM star interconnect configuration within the network element, and a second backplane interface for connecting to an STM star interconnect configuration within the network element.

A system for handling data traffic comprises a plurality of network switches, each network switch having an interface to a packet network, the interface arranged so as to provide at least one link aggregation group, an interface to at least one other network switch, and an interface to each of a plurality of optical network service units, a plurality of optical network service units, each optical network service units having an interface to each of the plurality of network switches and an interface to at least one optical network, wherein each network switch is operable to receive data over a link aggregation group from the packet network and transmit the data to at least one optical network service unit either directly or via another network switch based on an optical network to which the data is destined (or other criteria) Also, each optical network service unit can send upstream data to any port of either network switch- via selected internal paths.

The network element includes components, and the connection data includes entries for connections between components. A connection initiation event initiating a change of the connection data is established to have occurred. A first connection is automatically deleted in response to establishing that the connection initiation event has occurred, where the first connection is deleted by deleting a first entry recording the first connection. A second connection is automatically created by creating a second entry recording the second connection.
