A vacuum retaining arrangement for retaining a vacuum within a condenser of a steam power plant during a short term outage or shutdown. At least a portion of a turbine gland packing near the condenser, with respect to a sealing steam supply portion, is connected and communicated with an air extractor through a gland condenser. The sealing steam which would otherwise flow into the condenser from the turbine gland package is suctioned or extracted from the gland packing into the gland condenser and the air extractor during the short term outage or shutdown so as to prevent the sealing steam from leaking into the condenser.

New anthracycline derivatives, 1-hydroxy-13-dihydrodaunomycin and N-formyl-1-hydroxy-13-dihydrodaunomycin are produced by microbial transformation of .epsilon.-pyrromycinone and .epsilon.-isorhodomycinone with daunomycin-producing streptomyces and their mutants. The derivatives herein are useful as cancer chemotherapeutic agents.

New anthracycline glycosides designated MA 144-G1, -G2, -L, -S1, -N1, -U1 and -Y which inhibit the growth of gram-positive bacteria and mammalian tumors are produced by fermentation of certain species of Streptomyces and by the chemical or enzymatic conversion of certain anthracycline glycosides. New microbiological and chemical processes are also provided for preparation of the anthracycline glycosides MA 144-S2 and -U2 which have been found to be identical with the previously reported anthracyclines, marcellomycin and musettamycin.

A novel fuel producing section produces synthesized gas from a feedstock and synthesizes novel fuel from the synthesized gas thus produced, and has exhaust heat recovery boilers for generating steam by recovering excess heat generated from the synthesizing processes. An exhaust heat utilizing section includes steam turbines driven with the steam generated from the exhaust heat recovery boilers. An open circulation cooling water supply section supplies cooling water for a plant, including water for cooling exhausts of the steam turbines, and includes a seawater desalination system for desalinating seawater by the evaporation method and supplying desalinated water to replenish the cooling water. The cooling water supplied from the open circulation cooling water supply section is used in condensing of the desalinated water produced by the seawater desalination system.
