A coating composition that is incorporated into a facemask to reduce fogging and glare is provided. For example, in one embodiment, the facemask contains a shield or visor formed from a transparent substrate having at least one surface applied with the coating composition of the present invention. The present inventors have unexpectedly discovered that one or more water-soluble organic polymers, such as ethyl hydroxyethylcellulose, may be utilized as a principal component of the coating composition to reduce fogging and glare in a simple, yet effective manner.

The present invention relates to a composite material including a substrate with a first and a second layer, and a surfactant. The surfactant is applied to the first layer of the substrate. The surfactant acts to lower the surface tension of a fluid which contacts the first layer of the substrate such that the fluid is allowed or more readily enabled to pass through the first layer of the substrate, but such that the surfactant does not substantially adversely effect the absorption capacity or wicking height of the second layer of the substrate, as the second layer of the substrate substantially inactivates the surfactant upon contact or interaction therewith.

The face mask includes a body portion that has an outer layer that has been treated with a germicidal agent in an effective amount. The layer may be a nonwoven fabric like a spunbond, meltblown or coform layer and may be a laminate of such layers. The face mask having such a germicidal treatment can result in a reduction in microbial activity as compared to another face mask, identical but for the germicidal agent.

In one desirable embodiment, the wettability of the fabric is temperature dependent and may decrease as the temperature decreases. Such fabrics may be useful as components in absorbent products, for example liners and surge management layers, by providing components that are wettable during an initial insult and then decrease in wettabilty as the insult cools to discourage flow back of the insult.

The treatment involves, in part, preparing a substrate to accept an attachment of charged moieties, and a number of stabilized peroxide compounds on at least part of a surface of said substrate. When microbes, such as bacteria, having a net charge opposite to that of the charged moieties come in close proximity to the treated substrate surface, peroxide molecules from the substrate are activated and released to kill the microbes.

As described herein, an abrasion resistant nonwoven fabric includes fibers having an external surface covered with a treatment selected from the group consisting of organosilicone compounds applied by plasma treatment in inert gas without the presence of oxygen and acrylic monomers having a Tg greater than or equal to 20 degrees C. applied onto the nonwoven fabric and subsequently surface grafted and crosslinked via exposure to plasma glow discharge or e-beam without the presence of oxygen. The surfactant may be either a single surfactant or a multi-surfactant system.
