Abstract: A power source, designed to be bent or flexed during use, may include a layer of anode material having a length greater than a layer of cathode material to accommodate for movement of the cathode or anode layers during flexing of the power source. An enclosure containing the cathode and anode materials may include an inner protective layer proximate to the cathode and anode layers and a water-impermeable layer external to the inner protective layer. The water-impermeable layer may have a pleated or corrugated configuration that may be extended when the power source is bent under application of a flexure stress, preventing damage or deformation to the water-impermeable layer.

Abstract: A power storage unit (e.g., a battery) may replace the structural components that support the display of an electronic device. The power storage unit may be adhered to the back surface of the display to provide structural support and to allow for bend or flex of the display. A self-healing layer may prevent or inhibit leaking of materials from within the power storage unit if the power storage unit is cracked or pierced. Alternatively, the power storage unit may be built on a flexible circuit that is associated with the display of the electronic device, where the flexible circuit/power storage unit may be folded around the display and affixed to the back surface of the display. The power storage unit may also be built on substrate associated with the back surface of the display. These configurations may cause a significant reduction in the depth or thickness of the electronic device.

Abstract: Systems, methods, and computer-readable media are disclosed for improved battery performance. The systems, methods, and computer-readable media described herein may improve user experiences and prolong the battery's life. In an example method described herein, a battery may be placed within a clamp or housing that applies configurable pressure to the battery. In turn, the applied pressure may counter the swelling pressure of the battery and improve the battery's power output, reduce the internal resistance or impedance, and improve the life cycle of the battery.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure relate to graphene-based battery packaging. In one aspect, the graphene-based battery packaging can include an assembly of translucent members, including a thin graphene-based member which can be embodied or can comprise a film of graphene layers, a film of graphene oxide, or a combination thereof. In another aspect, the graphene-based member can be assembled to form an interlayer between two of the translucent members in the assembly. In certain aspects, each of the two translucent members can be embodied in or can include a thermoplastic material. In another aspect, at least one of the translucent members in the assembly can be doped with aggregates that provide a predetermined color to the assembly. In one aspect, the graphene-based member can provide substantive isolation between translucent members separated thereby, thus mitigating diffusion of atoms, molecules, and/or particulates between such members.

Abstract: Systems, methods, and computer-readable media are disclosed for lithium-ion batteries with solid electrolyte membranes. In one embodiment, a battery cell may include a copper current collector, a first layer in contact with the copper current collector, the first layer comprising polyvinylidene fluoride, an anode comprising a first lithiated polymer binder configured to conduct lithium ions, where the first layer is disposed between the copper current collector and the anode, and a lithiated polymer electrolyte membrane in contact with the anode. The battery cell may include a cathode in contact with the lithiated polymer electrolyte membrane and comprising a second lithiated polymer binder configured to conduct lithium ions, a second layer in contact with the cathode, the second layer comprising polyvinylidene fluoride, and an aluminum current collector disposed adjacent to the second layer, wherein the aluminum current collector is a positive current collector.

Abstract: A system and method for operating a portable electronic device are presented. The device includes a battery and a controller. The controller is configured to execute instructions for determining a first resistance value for the battery during a first power cycle of the battery, and determining a second resistance value for the battery during a second power cycle of the battery. The second power cycle is after the first power cycle. The controller is configured to execute instructions for determining that a first difference equal to the first resistance value subtracted from the second resistance value is less than a first predetermined threshold value, and electrically isolating the battery. In an embodiment, the first resistance value and the second resistance values are determined at the same state of charge for the battery.
