An aromatic functional fluid, specifically a monoalkylated tetradecyl diphenyl oxide synthetic lubricant, contains a polymer-supported reaction product of an organic quaternary ammonium salt, derived from a mercapto-heterocycle and a quaternary ammonium salt. To produce the polymer-supported organic quaternary ammonium salt, the salt is reacted with a dicarboxylic acid or anhydride, specifically 2-dodecen-1-ylsuccinic anhydride. An arylamine antioxidant, such as alkylated phenyl naphthylamine, can be added to the polymer supported organic quaternary ammonium salt-treated functional fluid to impart extra antioxidant and stability properties.

Epoxy functionalized polyalpha-olefin lubricants compositions are prepared with superior properties by epoxidizing the olefinic bond of oligomers prepare by oligomerizing C.sub.6 -C.sub.20 alpha-olefins with reduced valence state chromium catalyst on silica support. The invention encompasses a product of reaction made by epoxidizing C.sub.30 + polyalpha-olefin oligomeric hydrocarbon lubricant having a branch ratio of less than 0.19 and pour point below -15.degree. C. in the presence of an epoxidizing amount of an epoxidizing agent wherein said product comprises a mixture of 2-dialkyl oxirane and 1,2-dialkyl oxirane having between an average of C.sub.30 and C.sub.1000 carbon atoms, said mixture having a branch ratio of less than 0.19 and pour point below -15.degree. C. The invention further encompasses blends and additive compositions of the novel epoxidizing polyalpha-olefins.

Block and random straight chain and star-branched liquid copolymers of two different conjugated dienes, the residual ethylenic unsaturation of the polymerized units of one of which, e.g. isoprene, is less readily hydrogenated than that of the other diene, e.g., butadiene. In the case of block copolymers, the terminal blocks of a straight chain copolymer or the blocks of the free ends of the branches of a star-branched copolymer are composed of the less readily hydrogenated diene polymer while the more readily hydrogenated diene polymer is in the form of central blocks of a straight chain copolymer or interior blocks of the branches of a star-branched copolymer. These copolymers may be selectively hydrogenated so that substantially all of the residual ethylenic unsaturation of the more readily hydrogenated polymerized diene units are hydrogenated while enough residual ethylenic unsaturation of the less readily hydrogenated polymerized diene units remains unhydrogenated to provide sufficient sites for subsequent vulcanization or chemical modification. The combination of elastomeric properties and oxidative stability possessed by the polymers of this invention makes them suitable for many and uses such as sealants, caulks and adhesives.

There is disclosed a linear block copolymer comprising at least one triblock I-B-I, wherein I is a block of at least one polymerized conjugated diene of at least five (5) carbon atoms, such as isoprene, and B is a block of a polymer of at least one conjugated diene, different from that used to polymerize the block I, of at least four (4) carbon atoms, such as 1,3-butadiene. The B block is selectively hydrogenated, while each of the I blocks is unhydrogenated and therefore retains a sufficient amount of its original unsaturation to vulcanize the copolymer. There is also disclosed an alternative linear block copolymer containing at least one triblock of the first polymer block made from a minor proportion of at least one aryl-substituted olefin, such as styrene, and a major proportion of at least one conjugated diene used to polymerize the block I, the second middle polymer block of at least one diene used to polymerize the block B, and the third polymer block which is the same as the first polymer block. There are also disclosed random linear and star-branched block and random copolymers made from the same monomers as the linear block copolymers.

The coking tendencies of heavy hydrocarbon feedstocks are reduced by treatment with a free radical removing catalyst such as a transition metal naphthenate, preferably at temperatures below 350.degree. C. The treated product has improved stability as such and may be treated in subsequent processing operations such as catalytic cracking and thermal cracking, including visbreaking and coking, with improved liquid yield and reduced coke production.
