    Abstract: Described is an aqueous polymer dispersion comprising a chain growth addition polymer obtainable via free-radically initiated emulsion polymerization from ethylenically unsaturated, free-radically polymerizable monomers, wherein the chain growth addition polymer is formed to an extent of not less than 60 wt % from primary monomers selected from vinylaromatic compounds, conjugated aliphatic dienes, vinyl esters of saturated C1- to C20-carboxylic acids, esters of acrylic acid or of methacrylic acid with monohydric C1- to C20-alcohols, aliphatic hydrocarbons having 2 to 8 carbon atoms and one or two double bonds, or mixtures thereof, wherein the monomers are polymerized in the presence of lignosulfonate and wherein the chain growth addition polymer is branched or crosslinked. Also described is a process for preparing the aqueous polymer dispersion. The polymer dispersion is useful for preparing paper coating compositions.

    Abstract: A mixture of water-emulsifiable isocyanates is described. The mixture contains (A) at least one polyisocyanate (a), (B) at least one emulsifier obtained by reacting at least one polyisocyanate with at least one polyether alcohol having a molecular weight of less than 400 g/mol, (C) at least one emulsifier obtained by reacting at least one polyisocyanate with at least one polyether alcohol having a molecular weight of greater than 450 g/mol, and (D) optionally at least one emulsifier obtained by reacting a polyisocyanate with at least one compound (d) having at least one hydrophilic, non-isocyanate-reactive group and precisely one isocyanate-reactive group (group D2). The weight ratio of component (B) to component (C) in the mixture is from 30:70 to 70:30, preferably from 40:60 to 60:40.

    Abstract: Binder systems for high-gloss coatings and processes for producing them are provided, where the binder systems are prepared by preparing an aqueous polymer dispersion by radically initiated aqueous emulsion polymerization using defined first and second polymerization stages wherein the weight ratio of the sum of the total amounts of first polymerization stage monomers A1 to C1 (total monomer amount 1) to the sum of the total amounts of second polymerization stage monomers A2 to C2 (total monomer amount 2) is in the range 5:95 to 70:30, the amount of chain transfer agent in the second polymerization stage is selected such that the resulting overall polymer has a weight-average molecular weight of ≥15 000 and ≤50 000 g/mol, and the amount of the dispersing assistant is ≤3.0 wt %, based on the sum of total monomer amount 1 and total monomer amount 2 (total monomer amount).
