    Abstract: A hydraulic brake booster is disclosed which provides a power assist to the vehicle operator during a brake application. Pressurized fluid is normally supplied to the booster from the vehicle''s power steering pump. However, an electric pump is provided to supply fluid to the booster when the power steering pump malfunctions. Flow of fluid between the power steering pump and the booster is controlled by an operator-actuated spool valve which is shiftable from a first position in which the booster chamber is communicated to a fluid reservoir to a second position in which the fluid communication between the chamber and the reservoir is terminated and flow of fluid between the power steering pump and the chamber is initiated. However, when the electric pump is actuated, a stop piston prevents movement of the spool valve. Fluid at a relatively low pressure then circulates through the booster chamber and through internal passages within the spool valve. When the operator applies the brakes of the vehicle while the electric pump is operating, a cap member which is slidably mounted on the spool valve is shifted to a position impeding flow of fluid through the passages within the spool valve, thereby increasing the fluid pressure level within the chamber to apply the brakes of the vehicle.

    Abstract: A pumping apparatus for use in a power braking system. A bearing in a housing retains a rotatable shaft eccentrically connected to a piston. The rotatable shaft has a slot at the bottom of a stepped internal bore. A rotor of an electric motor is surrounded by a shell. One end of the rotor shaft is retained by an end bearing cap in the shell while the other end has a flattened portion extending past the open end of the shell. A resilient alignment member is positioned in the stepped bore. The flattened end of the armature shaft is guided through the resilient alignment member into engagement with the slot of the rotatable shaft until the surrounding shell is abuttingly secured to the housing. Now, any rotation of the armature shaft will be directly transferred by the rotatable shaft to provide reciprocating movement movement to the pump piston supplying fluid pressure to the braking system.

    Abstract: A fluid pressure control valve consisting of a housing with a bore therein. A valve sleeve with an internal division is inserted in the bore. A plug is fixed to one end of the sleeve to form a first chamber and a valve seat attached to the opposite end of a control chamber. A ball valve carried on a valve stem, whose diameter is larger than the valve seat, is contained in the control chamber. A valve return spring surrounding the valve stem biases the ball valve against the valve seat during normal operating pressures but during periods of high pressure allows the ball valve to move away from the seat to release this high pressure into a reservoir thereby preventing damage to the brake system.

    Abstract: A vehicle brake applying mechanism which utilizes a dual source of fluid under pressure to assist the vehicle operator in slowing or stopping the vehicle. The mechanism includes a hydraulic brake booster comprising an operator controlled piston slidably located in a housing for movement at the will of the operator, through the manipulation of valve means to thereby establish a braking force in a master cylinder to which the piston is connected. Under normal conditions the brake booster receives its main source of fluid under pressure from an engine-driven pump which also supplies fluid to the vehicle''s steering gear. However, an independent subsidiary source of fluid under pressure is supplied to the booster should the main source of fluid reach a predetermined minimum value. The subsidiary source is activated or rendered effective by a low flow sensitive switch located in the main supply for energizing an electric pump which is in communication with the booster piston via the valve means. The subsidiary source also actuates a shut-off valve interposed between the booster and steering gear to disestablish flow to the gear, thus conserving the subsidiary source for booster use only.
