The invention relates to a wafer scale process for the manufacture of optical waveguide devices, and particularly for the manufacture of ridge waveguide devices, and the improved waveguides made thereby. The present invention has found a process for achieving sub-micron control of an optical waveguiding layer thickness by providing a dimensionally stable wafer assembly into which adhesive can be introduced without altering the planar relationship between a carrier wafer and an optically transmissive wafer in wafer scale manufacture. This process permits wafer scale manufacture of optical waveguide devices including thin optically transmissive layers. A pattern of spacer pedestals is created by a deposition and etch back, or by a surface etch process to precisely reference surface information from a master surface to a carrier wafer to a thin optically transmissive wafer. The tolerance achievable in accordance with this process provides consistent yield across the wafer.

A portable spectrometer device includes an illumination source for directing at a sample, and a tapered light pipe (TLP) for capturing light interacting with the sample at a first focal ratio and for delivering the light at a second focal ratio lower than the first focal ratio. A linearly variable filter (LVF) separates the captured light into a spectrum of constituent wavelength signals; and a detector array, including a plurality of pixels, each of the plurality of pixels disposed to receive at least a portion of a plurality of the constituent wavelength signals provides a power reading for each constituent wavelength. Preferably, the TLP is lensed at one end, and recessed in a protective boot with stepped inner walls. The gap between the TLP and LVF is minimized to further enhance resolution and robustness.

The invention provides a space-variant liquid-crystal (LC) photo-aligned waveplate having a vortex optic axis pattern, and an apparatus and method for fabricating thereof. The method in it preferred embodiment includes exposing a substrate coated with a photo-alignable material such as LPP to linearly polarized UV radiation through a wedge-shaped aperture, while rotating two of the aperture, the substrate and the polarization of the UV light, so that an exposure area performs a full rotation about a center point on the substrate, at angular velocities selected so as to form a vortex alignment pattern of a pre-defined order. An LC material is then deposited on the substrate in direct contact with the photo-alignable material so that the LC director is aligned according to the photo-induced vortex alignment pattern. The method enables to fabricate vortex waveplate of any pre-defined vortex order.
