摘要: A method for forming a metal flow module includes forming a flux retention feature on a first major surface of a first metal plate and then applying flux to the first major surface. The flux retention feature is configured to retain the flux at least in part on the first surface. The method further includes positioning a second major surface of a second metal plate against the first major surface of the first metal plate. The second metal plate has one or more flow channels defined at least in part in the second major surface. The flux is positioned between first contacting portions of the first and second major surfaces. The method further includes heating the first and second metal plates in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to thermally bond the first contacting portions.

摘要: Bromine doping of silica glass is demonstrated. Bromine doping can be achieved with SiBr4 as a precursor. Bromine doping can occur during heating, consolidation or sintering of a porous silica glass body. Doping concentrations of bromine increase with increasing pressure of the doping precursor and can be modeled with a power law equation in which doping concentration is proportional to the square root of the pressure of the doping precursor. Bromine is an updopant in silica and the relative refractive index of silica increases approximately linearly with doping concentration. Bromine can be used as a dopant for optical fibers and can be incorporated in the core and/or cladding regions. Core doping concentrations of bromine are sufficient to permit use of undoped silica as an inner cladding material in fibers having a trench in the refractive index profile. Co-doping of silica glass with bromine and chlorine is also demonstrated.

摘要: A device and a process for forming a monolithic substantially closed-porosity ceramic fluidic device having a tortuous fluid passage extending through the device, the tortuous fluid passage having a smooth interior surface, a material of the ceramic body having a continuous and uniform distribution of grains at least between opposed major surfaces of the ceramic body. The process includes positioning a positive fluid passage mold within a volume of binder-coated ceramic powder, pressing the volume of ceramic powder with the mold inside to form a pressed body, heating the pressed body to remove the mold, and sintering the pressed body. A relationship between a first stability characteristic of the volume of ceramic powder and a second stability characteristic of the mold prevents discontinuities in the pressed body after pressing and/or during heating.

摘要: A method for forming a metal flow module includes stacking together a first metal plate having opposing first and second major surfaces and one or more flow channels defined at least in part in the first major surface with a second metal plate having opposing first and second major surfaces, the plates stacked together with their respective first major surfaces facing each other and with a layer of flux positioned in between contacting portions of the respective first major surfaces defined as those portions of the respective first and second major surfaces which would be in contact absent the flux; then heating the plates together in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to thermally bond the contacting portions of the respective first major surfaces of the first and second metal plates. Resulting modules are also disclosed.
