The first method involves monitoring in which region the subscriber is located, and determining at least one possible CoS that can be provided using at least one of the FSO and RF networks, based on a transmission bandwidth capability of the region in which the subscriber is located. Another method involves comparing projected costs of possible CoSs, and selecting a CoS to provide to the subscriber. A load balancing and resource sharing method involves determining whether or not to provide additional bandwidth capacity in, or to re allocate bandwidth capacity among, transceivers in FSO and RF networks, in clusters of the transceivers, or in aggregates of the clusters of the transceivers.

Tests can be run from within the module itself, thereby eliminating the risk, expense and time required to use external testing systems and data to test the module. In another embodiment, operational data such as live operational orders are wrapped in test headers and are used as input data for testing purposes within the billing module. In this embodiment, test APIs may be embedded into all modules of an operational support system so that complete system end-to-end testing is possible without the use of dedicated external test equipment and processes.

A method for synchronously adapting radio frequency channel selection based on an application which can range from low bandwidth applications such as instant messaging to high bandwidth applications such as streaming video selected by an end user cellular telecommunications device involves providing end user devices with synchronous adaptive radio selection (SARS) modules. The SARS modules perform as sensory agents for identifying usage by the end user device of applications and thus permit monitoring for interference, congestion and the like in the cellular telecommunications network. The sensory agents preferably determine their location and altitude for comparison with reference topographic relief maps of a geographic area surrounding a base station. Control reference test stations collect information from the sensory agents and further receive updates on security alerts and network administration policies from a base station, for example, equipped with a base station scheduler. The reference test stations periodically output channel control information including a reference clock frequency, its identity, interference levels, policies and security updates for the base stations and end user devices to optimize radio frequency selection based on utilized applications. Consequently, the control reference stations oversee channel characteristics in a centralized manner and provide guidelines to base stations for optimized traffic flows and altimetry enhanced application performance.

A wireless data access system is provided to ameliorate bursty traffic occurring in a radio communications link such as a WiFi, WiMAX, 3G or cellular telephone link to a wireless network access device. A data traffic event is detected relating to traffic in the link. The traffic event may be a traffic burst exceeding a predetermined threshold. Based on detecting the data traffic event, a free-space optical communications link is established to the network access device to handle the traffic burst. The established radio link may be used to set-up and coordinate the free-space optical link.

An arrangement for providing, on an ad hoc basis, closed user group (CUG) among a collection of pre-defined IP network users. A set of intelligent access devices, dispersed through the IP network, constantly transmit a set of pings associated with the defined CUGs to discover those devices within its communication range. The discovered IP addresses for each device is thus constantly updated, allowing group members to remain in constant contact (emulating an “always on” connection). The users feel they are always connected with group members and thus have instant access to voice/data/video sessions—much like hot lines or “always on” connections.

A voice-activated command interface module for interacting with a plurality of home-based electronic devices so as to allow for a remotely-located home owner to communicate with, command and control various ones of the electronic devices. The module includes a plurality of communication ports, each communication port associated with a different type of communication interface for providing communications to and from the plurality of electronic devices. The module also includes a voice network communication port for receiving the voice commands from the home owner and a data network communication port for transmitting monitoring and control information between the plurality of electronic devices and the home owner. In operation, the command interface module is responsive to voice commands received from a remote user via an incoming telephone line (either data or voice). A voice recognition unit within the command interface module is utilized to translate the received voice signal into an “action/control” signal and then perform the desired activity.
