This invention is concerned with novel polysilanes containing olefinic groups which are prepared by reactions of halogen-containing organosilane monomers or mixtures thereof with sodium metal in an appropriate solvent or mixture of solvents. Such polysilane polymers are soluble and thermoplastic, and can be directly converted to silicon carbide compositions by pyrolysis at atmospheric pressure.

A method of preparing silazane polymers, with 3 or more repeating units, of the general formula--((CH.sub.3).sub.2 N).sub.e Si(R).sub.a (R'HN).sub.f H.sub.c (NR').sub.g --and a (CH.sub.3).sub.2 NH byproduct group where R is hydrogen, an alkyl group having 1-6 carbon atoms or an aryl group having 6-12 carbon atoms, a=0, or 1, b=2-4, C=0-2, d=0 or 1, e=0-2, f=0-2, g=1-3 and a+c+e+f+g=4 for the polymer units; and R' is hydrogen or methyl, whereby the silazane polymer is substantially free of halide impurities, and wherein this method comprises:transaminating an aminosilane of the general formula (R).sub.a ((CH.sub.3).sub.2 N).sub.b H.sub.c S; where R is defined as above and a+b+c=4 with an amine of the general formula (CH.sub.3).sub.d NH.sub.3-d whereby d is defined as above and the amine has a molecular weight lower than 45 all in the presence of an acid catalyst or the ammonium salt of the acid and thereafter condensing to form the polymer.

A hydrogen bearing silyl carbamate of the general formula:HSiR.sub.n (O.sub.2 CNR'R").sub.3-nis synthesized from hydrogen bearing aminosilane and gaseous carbon dioxide. The resulting hydrogen bearing silyl carbamate is novel in the single hydrogen attached to the silyl carbamate and represents a major new compound for creating novel compositions of matter.

C. and in the presence of a reaction promoter. As a result, the time and the amount of platinum catalyst required for the reaction are significantly reduced and conversion and yield of the product increased.

Organosilicone polymers are provided containing monofunctional units (R).sub.3 SiO.sub.1/2 and reoccurring difunctional units (R)(Q)SiO.sub.2/2 and (R)(E)SiO.sub.2/2, as essentially the sole types of units or in combination with reoccurring difunctional dialkylsiloxy units, R.sub.2 SiO.sub.2/2, where R of said units is alkyl, Q is --O--R.degree.--CN or --R.degree.--CN, R.degree. being bivalent alkylene, and E is a polyoxyalkylene block, at least 75 weight percent of the oxyalkylene content of the polymers being constituted of oxyethylene and the mole ratio of the (R).sub.3 SiO.sub.1/2 :(R).sub.2 SiO.sub.2/2 :(R)(Q)SiO.sub.2/2 :(R)(E)SiO.sub.2/2 units being about 2:0-20:2-20:2-30, provided the combined weight of said units is constituted, on the average, of from about 50 to about 85 weight percent of said polyoxyalkylene blocks (E). The polymers of the invention are effective stabilizers of flexible polyester polyol-based polyurethane foams and offer particular advantage in the formation of flame-retarded foams. Also described is a particular class of cyano-substituted polyalkylsiloxane hydrides which are useful in the preparation of the aforesaid polymers.
