    Abstract: In the present invention, an ancillary code is added to a composite video signal in its active video portion. The ancillary code may be spread over several frequencies and summed at the output of a decoder to enhance the legibility of the ancillary code at the output of the decoder. Frequency-stepping may be used to add the ancillary code at ones of a plurality of selected frequencies within the bandwidth of the composite video signal. The ancillary code may be hierarchically apportioned between respective uniquely specified sequential segments corresponding to many distribution points of the composite television signal. This hierarchical ancillary code may be frequency-interleaved between harmonics of the horizontal sync frequency of the composite video signal. The ancillary code may be redundantly added above and below the roll-off frequency of a VCR.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for identifying predetermined individual members of a television viewing audience/marketing group in a plurality of monitored areas. A plurality of predetermined identification signals are stored each corresponding to one of the predetermined individual members. A transmitter device for transmitting a unique predetermined identification signal is associated with each of the predetermined individual members. A receiver device in each of the plurality of monitored areas receives the transmitted predetermined identification signals and applies the received signals to an associated memory device used for storing the received individual member signals. A central processor periodically retrieves the stored individual member signals from each memory device. The received predetermined identification signals are compared with the stored predetermined identification signals to identify the predetermined individual members and further processed to correlate each of the identified individual members at different ones of the monitored areas.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for determining the channel of a plurality of predetermined channels to which a remotely controlled receiver is tuned. A first transmitter device includes a keyboard for receiving viewer entered selections and transmits infrared or ultrasonic control signals for each of the viewer tuning and ON/OFF selections. A receiver device receives the transmitted control signal from the first transmitter and applies the received signal to a processor device that performs a stored program to identify the channel to which the monitored receiver is tuned. An associated memory device is used for storing the identified channel reception data. The processor device identifies the user selection and applies a corresponding second control signal to a second transmitter device. The second transmitted control signals have a predetermined format of the existing remote control receiver of the monitored receiver that is different than a predetermined format of the control signals of the first transmitter device.

    Abstract: Method and apparatus for identifying a number of people in a monitored area wherein a first reflected ultrasonic wave map of the monitored area is collected that includes background objects. A second reflected ultrasonic wave map of the monitored area is collected when people may be present in the monitored area. The first collected background defining map is subtracted from the second collected map to obtain a resulting map. The resulting map is processed to identify clusters having a minimum intensity. A cluster size of the thus identified clusters is utilized to identify clusters corresponding to people. The ultrasonic detecting method and apparatus is utilized with a wave signal receiver for identifying an audience composition of the receiver and determining the viewing habits of the public.

    Abstract: A sensor developing a digital output in response to force induced deflection in which the deflection is of a beam formed to have, under stress, a surface undulate in both compression and tension. The signal is developed from piezoelectric transducers connected in a pair of oscillator circuits utilizing surface acoustic wave paths through, respectively, the tension and the compression portions of the beam surface. The frequencies of the oscillators are compared and the frequency difference resulting from beam deflection is sent as a signal to a counter to give a digital read out of the force causing the deflection. The beam is formed of steel and the piezoelectric surface for the surface waves and the interdigitated conductors forming the transducers are deposited by thin film techniques on the beam.

    Abstract: The main wheels of a wheelchair are attached to the chair at a predetermined one of a plurality of camber angles differing by one or more predetermined angular measure(s). The apparatus comprises a bracket extending from the wheelchair's frame as well as a plurality of axle retainers disposed about and juxtaposed along the stub axle, the retainers used to mount the axle in the bracket. Switching from a first of two predetermined camber angles to the second requires removing the axle and retainers from the bracket, translating the axle either inboard or outboard (i.e., either toward or away from the center of the chair) by a predetermined amount, and reattaching the wheel to the chair. The operation may also involve adjusting the length of one or more of the bracket legs.     Abstract: An acoustic sensor and associated electronic circuitry are used to determine when a catastrophic leak (as e.g. may be caused by a sprinkler nozzle being broken off a pipe) occurs in a sprinkling system. When a catastrophic leak is detected, an alarm signal is generated and a shutoff valve may be actuated in order to prevent loss of fluid and possible damage that can occur due to localized high flow of the fluid that is being sprayed. The acoustic sensor responds to a frequency range of acoustic signals that encompasses the generally low frequency signals generated by the relatively unconstrained flow of fluid through a pipe, as well as the higher frequency signals generated by flow of fluid through one or more nozzles. Electronic signal processing means are employed to form a ratio of the acoustic power in two different frequency regions and to generate an alarm signal when flow generates an excess of low frequency acoustic power.
