    摘要: A surgical instrument according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a housing portion and an endoscopic portion having a proximal end and a distal end, the endoscopic portion including a pair of coaxial members attached at the proximal end to the housing portion. The endoscopic portion also includes an inner rod member slidable within an outer tube member. The endoscopic portion terminates at the distal end in a pair of jaw members disposed in opposing relation and relatively pivotal about a common point between at least an open position and a closed position. A jaw control mechanism is associated with the housing portion, and includes at least one actuating member movably mounted in the housing portion. The actuation member has at least one gripping portion thereon such that an operator of the instrument can better manipulate the actuating member with a single hand. A linking member is pivotally connected to the actuating member and the inner rod member. A notch portion is disposed on the rod member such that when the actuating member is moved in relation to the housing portion in a first direction to a first position the engaging portion engages the notch, locking the jaws in a closed position. The surgical instrument also includes means for preventing the inner rod member from moving from the first position whereby coaxial reciprocating forces are created in the inner rod member when the locking means are moved to the first position.

    摘要: A pneumatically powered trocar assembly includes a source of compressed gas which releases a metered amount of gas to a chamber. A piston slidably positioned within the chamber is driven forward by the compressed gas introduced therein, and an obturator with a tissue piercing tip are advanced thereby. Optionally, a sensor detects the presence of body tissue within the cutting path of the tip and blocks the passage of compressed gas to the chamber, or alternatively, opens an escape vent to release compressed gas therefrom if insufficient body tissue resistance is encountered. The powered trocar assembly is intended for use in conjunction with a cannula assembly to create a passage to the interior of a body cavity for conducting surgical procedures.

    摘要: An endoscopic surgical instrument having a handle assembly, a body portion, and a tool mechanism in which a pivoting handle pivots about a stationary handle to open and close the tool mechanism. The instrument includes a rotatable body portion, in which a rotation knob is provided on the instrument at the stationary handle so that the user may rotate the body portion, and consequently the tool mechanism, using a single hand. Furthermore, an electrocautery confection is provided which is positioned out of the line of sight of the surgeon, so that the surgeon may have an unobstructed view to the surgical site. The pivoting handle is provided with a rotatable connection point for connecting the slidable rod member to essentially eliminate radial deflection of the rod within the outer tube during opening and closing of the handles.

    摘要: A safety trocar is provided in which the cannula is reciprocally mounted to the cannula housing and reciprocates into the cannula housing when a proximally directed force is applied thereto. The piercing tip is maintained in the exposed position by a latching mechanism associated with the obturator shaft, and is automatically withdrawn into the cannula under the force of a spring when the proximal force is removed from the cannula, the cannula thus advancing distally and releasing the latching mechanism. Penetration force is maintained at a minimum, and safe and efficacious trocar entry is facilitated.
