Method for providing a patterned thin film on a flexible web-like substrate having at least one surface. A patterned release coating which carries the desired pattern is deposited on the surface and has openings therein through which the surface of the substrate is exposed. A thin film is deposited over the patterned release coat and onto the portions of the surface exposed through the openings. The patterned release coating is then removed and the thin film portions carried thereby to provide a patterned thin film on the substrate.

The textured surface is coated with an interference thin film that exhibits a color shift with tilt. A uniform color seen at one angle of rotation changes to another uniform color when the optical device is rotated in its own plane. A method of manufacturing of such an optical device, as well as the use of the optical device as an optical security and authentication element, is also disclosed.

The optical device has a textured surface having a relief structure finer than a human eye resolution but large enough not to exhibit diffraction effects. The textured surface is coated with an interference thin film that exhibits a color shift with tilt. A uniform color seen at one angle of rotation changes to another uniform color when the optical device is rotated in its own plane. A method of manufacturing of such an optical device, as well as the use of the optical device as an optical security and authentication element, is also disclosed.

A multilayer thin film filter is disclosed an organic dielectric layer serving as a spacer layer in a Fabry-Perot structure. The dielectric has embossed regions of varying thicknesses wherein the thickness within a region is substantially uniform. Each different region of a different thickness produces a different color (shift). The size of one of the embossed adjacent regions is such that the color of said one region is uniform and cannot be seen by a human eye as different in color from the uniform color of an adjacent region thereto, and wherein the color within a region can be seen with magnification of at least 10:1. This serves as a covert color coding system useful as a security device.

The glitter particles have an organic substrate and an optical interference structure on one or both sides of the organic substrate. The optical interference design can be a Fabry-Perot structure or can be an optically variable ink.
