Abstract:
Pigmentary hydrated silica, alumina, calcium silicate or clay having particle sizes within the range of 0.1 to 44 microns are reacted with a cycloalkadiene-substituted halosilane having the general formula: RmSinX2n+2-m where R is a cycloaliphatic dienyl radical; X is a halogen heavier than fluorine, m equals 1 to 2n+1 and n equals 1 to 5. The preferred halosilane is a cyclopentadienyl trichlorosilane. The amount of silane employed is normally between 1 and 15 per cent by weight of the pigment and the treatment is preferably effected by dissolving the silane in an inert solvent such as a paraffinic or naphthanic hydrocarbon or an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent or halogenated organic solvent and thereafter adding the pigment to the resulting solution at temperatures from 0 DEG to 150 DEG C. with agitation. Hydrogen chloride may be evolved due to the reaction between the silane and free water or hydroxyl ions on the surface of the mineral particles. Some condensation of the silane simultaneously occurs. The solvents may then be evaporated at 35-100 DEG C. and the so treated pigments may be employed as fillers in rubbers, resins, synthetic resinous materials, paints and inks.ALSO:Pigmentary hydrated silica, calcium silicate, alumina or clay which has been reacted with a cycloalkadiene - substituted halosilane, particularly cyclopentadienyl trichlorosilane, (see Group III), is employed as a filler in rubbers, resins and inks, for example in natural and synthetic rubber, particularly butyl rubber, polychloroprene, dienenitrile rubber, or unsaturated resins such as styrene-diene resins, or saturated resins such as polystyrene, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, styrene - isobutylene copolymers. The modified mineral pigment is normally employed in amounts between 1-150 parts by weight per hundred parts of the rubber or resin. Examples relate to (i) butyl rubber compositions which are heat treated, milled and vulcanized; (iv) an emulsion copolymer of 75 per cent butadiene and 25 per cent acrylonitrile containing vulcanizing agents and plasticizers; and (v) neoprene vulcanizates, all containing cycloalkadiene halosilane modified silicas.
