A water-based, low-emission latex paint formulation includes a vinyl acetate/ethylene (VAE) latex including a VAE resin with from 80 to 95 weight % vinyl acetate residue and from 5 to 20 weight % ethylene residue, optionally including additional monomers as well as a pigment composition including inorganic solids selected from inorganic pigments, inorganic fillers and mixtures thereof present in an amount such that the paint formulation has a pigment volume concentration (PVC) of from 25% to 85%. The formulations are suitable for eggshell and flat latex paints and exhibit surprising durability.

A description is given of an aqueous vinyl ester copolymer dispersion stabilized with a combination of at least one protective colloid and of at least one emulsifier, said dispersion having a viscosity of less than 8000 mPa*s, a weight average dw of the particle sizes of 0.5 to 10 μm, and a ratio of weight average to number average of the particle sizes, dw/dn, of at least 2.5, and the polymer possessing a glass transition temperature of between −30 and +15° C.The dispersion can be used as an adhesive for nozzle application processes.

Disclosed are carpet products comprising at least one flexible substrate and at least one coating layer associated with the at least one flexible substrate. The coating layer is formed from an aqueous composition comprising: A) an emulsifier-stabilized vinyl acetate/ethylene (VAE) emulsion copolymer dispersion wherein the VAE copolymer therein comprises co-monomers which include at least vinyl acetate copolymerized with ethylene and optionally also with other additional functional and/or non-functional co-monomers; and B) at least one particulate filler material selected from particulate inorganic compounds and particulate plastic material. The vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer in the copolymer dispersion has a particle size, dw, ranging from about 50 to about 500 nm as determined by Laser Aerosol Spectroscopy. Such carpet products maintain their integrity and appearance after multiple machine washing operations. Some of these carpet products which have backing coated with certain of the coating compositions used herein also exhibit desirable non-slip properties.

The vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer in the copolymer dispersion has a selected ethylene content or glass transition temperature. It is also preferably substantially free of cross-linkable co-monomer moieties which generate formaldehyde upon curing and preferably has a particle size, dw, ranging from about 50 to about 500 nm. The carpet product is substantially free of polyvinyl chloride and bitumen and exhibits a Class B1 flame-retardancy in accordance with DIN 4102-14, corresponding to a critical heat flux of ≧about 4.5 kW/m2.

The invention relates to a method for reducing the amount of residual monomers in aqueous polymer dispersions means of chemical post-treatment. Post-treatment in the aqueous polymer dispersion is carried out by adding a redox system which contains a) 0.005-5 wt. % of an oxidation agent which contains an organic peroxide. and b) 0.005-5 wt. % of a reduction agent which contains sulfinic acids or salts thereof. Additionally the redox system can, optionally, contain catalytic amounts of a polyvalent metallic ion which can be treated in several valent stages. Post-treatment can be carried out at a temperature ranging from 20-100.degree. C. and at a PH-value ranging from 2-9. The invention also relates to the use of the inventive post-treated polymer dispersion for producing adhesives, coatings, powders, constructive chemical products or for refining textiles or paper.
