Abstract: A method of making a component of a radial or axial flux electrical machine is provided. An additive manufacturing process is used to manufacture a plurality of laminas, including applying beams of energy to a successive plurality of ferromagnetic material particles and fusing them together to form a ferromagnetic helix or spiral, disposing an insulating material on said ferromagnetic helix or spiral, compressing the ferromagnetic helix or spiral to form a compressed ferromagnetic helix or spiral, and fixing the compressed ferromagnetic helix or spiral. A method of making a component of a transverse flux electrical machine is provided, including using an additive manufacturing process.

Abstract: An armature is presented. The armature includes an armature winding having a plurality of coils, wherein each coil of the plurality of coils is spaced apart from adjacent coils and comprise includes a first side portion and a second side portion. The armature further includes a first electrically insulating winding enclosure. Furthermore, the armature includes a second electrically insulating winding enclosure disposed at a radial distance from the first electrically insulating winding enclosure, wherein the armature winding is disposed between the first electrically insulating winding enclosure and the second electrically insulating winding enclosure. Moreover, the armature includes an electrically insulating coil side separator disposed between the first side portion and the second side portion of the plurality of coils of the armature winding. A superconducting generator including the armature and a wind turbine having such superconducting generator are also presented.

Abstract: A magnetic unit is presented. The magnetic unit includes a magnetic core. The magnetic core includes a first limb and a second limb disposed proximate to the first limb, where a gap is formed between the first limb and the second limb. The magnetic unit further includes a first winding wound on the first limb. Moreover, the magnetic unit includes a conductive element disposed facing an outer periphery of the first winding, where the conductive element is configured to control a fringing flux generated at the gap. Further, the magnetic unit includes a heat sink operatively coupled to the conductive element, where the conductive element is further configured to transfer heat from at least one of the conductive element and the first winding to the heat sink. Moreover, a high frequency power conversion system and a method of operation of the magnetic unit is also presented.

Abstract: A method includes forming elongated magnetic flux carrier portions in magnetically conductive sheets by cutting elongated magnetic flux barriers including one or more relief features into the magnetically conductive sheets, such that the magnetic flux barriers are separated from each other in radial directions of the magnetically conductive sheets. The method includes inserting or forming non-magnetic posts into the magnetic flux barriers such that each of the non-magnetic posts is elongated in a different radial direction of the radial directions from a first magnetic flux carrier portion to a second magnetic flux carrier portion of the magnetic flux carrier portions on opposite sides of at least one magnetic flux barrier; and forming at least part of a rotor for an electric machine assembly using the magnetically conductive sheets having the magnetic flux carrier portions, the non-magnetic posts, and the magnetic flux barriers.

Abstract: An electric machine assembly includes a rotor formed from one or more magnetically conductive sheets having elongated magnetic flux barriers separated from each other in radial directions that radially extend away from an axis of rotation of the rotor. The magnetic flux barriers are separated from each other by magnetic flux carrier portions of the one or more magnetically conductive sheets. The assembly also includes a non-magnetic post coupled with the magnetic flux carrier portions of the one or more magnetically conductive sheets on opposite sides of at least one of the magnetic flux barriers. The non-magnetic post is elongated in the radial directions from a first magnetic flux carrier portion to a second magnetic flux carrier portion of the magnetic flux carrier portions on the opposite sides of the at least one magnetic flux barrier.
