The method includes the following: a) a first fuel quantity to be injected is predefined; b) a first value of the first quantity is ascertained, which results from a fuel injection according to the first fuel quantity to be injected; c) the fuel quantity to be injected is modified from the first fuel quantity to be injected in relation to an air quantity to be supplied to the internal combustion engine (1); d) a second value of the first quantity, which results from the change in the fuel quantity to be injected, is ascertained; e) the first value of the first quantity is compared to the second value of the first quantity, and f) as a function of the comparison result, a value for an air/fuel mixture ratio for the first fuel quantity to be injected prevailing prior to the change in the fuel quantity to be injected is ascertained independently of a measured value of a sensor measuring the oxygen level in the exhaust gas.

The invention relates to a method for operating an internal combustion engine, which can be operated with fuels and fuel mixtures of said fuels, said fuels differing from each other in the air quantity they require for a stoichiometric combustion. A fuel quantity to be supplied to the internal combustion engine is corrected via a mixture adaptation and a fuel adaptation, the mixture adaptation and the fuel adaptation being based on a lambda control and a fuel quantity contained in the fuel reservoir of the internal combustion engine prior to refueling and a fuel quantity supplied to the reservoir being determined. The method is characterized by using the change of the fuel adaptation after refueling towards a fuel/air mixture having a higher or a lower fuel percentage to extrapolate the supplied fuel or the supplied fuel mixture and the fuel quantity present in the reservoir and the knowledge of the nature of the fuel or the fuel mixture supplied to the reservoir are used to calculate the fuel mixture ration in the reservoir after refueling. The method according to the invention allows determination of the fuel mixture ratio in the reservoir of internal combustion engines which can be operated with different fuels.

Provision is made in many cases for the knock sensor to already be in the internal combustion engine, so that it does not present any additional expenditure of money or effort. Because the octane number of the fuel mixture is determined by the mixing ratio of the fuels involved, which have different octane numbers, in retrospect the composition of the fuel mixture can be suggested from the signal of the knock sensor under suitable operating conditions.

The mass flow offset can by way of example have the effect of shortening the duration injection. The mixture deviations as a result of different boiling curves of the components of the fuel blend, which cannot be completely taken into account by the map-based pilot control under all operating conditions of the internal combustion engine, can in this way be compensated.
