A system for recording and playing back multimedia events includes recording sources, a preprocessor, a delivery processor, and user control units. The recording sources each captures a continuous temporal record or track of the multimedia event and transmits the captured track to the source preprocessor where tracks are coded into digital blocks and digitized blocks of tracks received simultaneously are time stamped with the same relative time, and therefore synchronized in time. Tracks of the multimedia event are also compressed and preprocessed to generate other representations of the multimedia event, which further assist users in searching through the multimedia event. The delivery processor services users' requests for multimedia events and delivers events to requesting users according to users' interactive commands. The delivery processor also generates stacked representations of the tracks of the multimedia event, which representations provide visual cues to assist the user in conducting rapid and intelligent searches through the multimedia event. The user control unit receives requests and interactive commands from the user to be transmitted to the delivery processor and multimedia events from the delivery processor for presentation to the user. Our inventive method for recording and playing back multimedia events entails: capturing tracks of various aspects of a multimedia event; coding the tracks into digitized blocks; time stamping each block; and compressing and preprocessing each track as instructed in a source mapping table; transmitting tracks of the multimedia event to the user as requested; and adjusting the delivery of tracks based upon relative time information associated with a new position established after searching through a track of the multimedia event.

The apparatus includes a projection screen with a light receiving surface that is horizontally retroreflective and vertically diffusive. The apparatus includes a projector assembly including at least two projectors arranged side-by-side such that projection lenses of the projectors are horizontally aligned in a row. The apparatus includes a controller selectively operating the projectors to project at least two differing point-of-view images. The projection screen may take a number of useful embodiments to implement the autostereoscopic apparatus. For example, the projection screen may include a bottom layer including a retroreflective film that is retroreflective at least in the horizontal direction such as a brightness enhancement film and a top layer formed of a transparent sheet of lenticular material arranged for vertical diffusing.

A continuous and homogeneous luminescent gas or other visual display material whose optical characteristics change as a result of the applied electric field is used both to simultaneously detect capacitance changes associated with hidden objects and to display those detected those objects. Different types of chambers are disclosed for the gas as well as means to prevent fringing effects. The gas is held just at its ionization level at which point it becomes optically visible. Circuitry is disclosed for controlling the energy source based on current draw or light output of the gas and feedback circuitry is disclosed to neutralize the effects of ambient light. Also disclosed is a device and method for the detection and mapping of electric fields.

A low cost and extremely simple interface between a standard television receiver and an optical fiber carrying properly formatted intensity modulated optical signals is disclosed. Illustratively, the interface is a P-I-N diode or other photovoltaic element which is directly connected to the antenna terminals of a standard television set. Illustratively, the recirculation path includes a wavelength division demultiplexer and an individual delay element for each wavelength channel. Optical switches may be utilized to block or permit passage of individual wavelength channels in the recirculation path.

The apparatus includes a puppeteer vehicle from which a marionette is suspended. The puppeteer vehicle is positioned proximate to the lower side of the support membrane opposite the tender vehicle. To support the puppeteer vehicle, one or both of the vehicles includes one or more rotatable magnetic elements such that the attractive forces support the weight of the puppeteer vehicle and the marionette. Typically, the puppeteer vehicle is a passive follower, and the drive mechanism of the tender vehicle includes motors to move the magnetic elements and position the tender and following puppeteer vehicle with its marionette to provide a show.
